What exactly is wrong with suicide anyway? Back in the olden days, suicide was celebrated and expected. Not saying that’s the way to go either- both sides are too extreme- either NO one is allowed to suicide or ppl are EXPECTED to suicide (see history about civilizations sending their sick and old away into tents on the outskirts of the city- MANY/MOST civilizations did this).
If ppl want to suicide, why is there a need to stop them? Why keep ppl in misery bc YOU think they shouldn’t die? Or bc YOUR god “forbids” suicide?
I think that’s all fucking bullshit.
Isn’t it funny how everyone- especially these dumbass pro-lifers, think suicide and abortion are evil, yet they do NOTHING to actually HELP ppl live a better life? If a teenage girl wants an abortion, some (red) states make it near impossible to get an abortion. But do they HELP the girl with food/bills/childcare/baby stuff? NAH, ofc not. They CUT all the welfare and yet somehow expect poor ppl to have enough money to feed themselves and their unwanted unborn children. You’d think these pro-lifers who HATE minorities and HATE poor ppl would WANT poor ppl and especially poor minorities to get abortions.
What’s the better slogan?
America- home to idiots who don’t think.
OR
America- home of the hypocrites.

I guess we all take it for granted, killing yourself is forbidden, like killing others it was written on the stone wall when you were born and those were the rules from the start. Eventually you interalize them, and your own sense of disgust for them kicks in.
You do have to admit if you’ve ever seen what a person looks like after they die it’s unsettling at the very least to look at. It takes work to build up a stomach to look at dead bodies. Embalmed bodies are weirder still. Then there are the wounds left behind from killing yourself, and they don’t heal because everything shuts down when you’re dead.
I wish people just wouldn’t recover the body, but those days are gone. In certain time periods it was possible to walk to the edge of the wilderness and the wildlife would take care of the body. Or the weather would take care of the rest. Remains aren’t that durable of stuff.
Anyway, why people are anti suicide especially in the US. They aren’t in Canada. Japan is also weirdly pro suicide or at least people commit successfully a lot there. Europe is kind of middle of the road, more progressive than the US, probably less than Canada.
I think it probably follows the heat and religion map. The further south you go the worse it’ll be. The hotter the summers, the more prosperity gospels and the more conservatives there are around the less sympathy you’ll get. You’d be best off in Seattle I’d wager.
Dr. Kavorkian tried to make America more pro death. I wish there was another doctor like him. It’s like I wish there was another Timothy Leary.
I don’t know if it’ll ever turn around. I know I asked about it when I was taking classes at university, but I don’t think I got any answers that made me think that change was possible without me getting into the upper ranks of the profession.
To me part of this seems to be a kind of missionary or slave/plantation/ranch owner mentality, where some people as long as they remain in control view other people as resources and themselves as “benefactors”.
yeah, the rich sees us as “useless eaters.” look up WEF if you don’t know what they are. all the rich are part of WEF. their whole mentality of the masses is to brainwash us with “you will own nothing and be happy.”
Exactly. It’s because America never achieved separation of church & state, like every other civilized country, we’re still controlled by fuckers who want to push their god on all of us (as a means to control all of us). So we have attitudes dating back to the 1600s saying suicide is evil, and women who don’t stick to the kitchen and have babies must be witches so burn them. All this talk of freedom is just a smokescreen. We can’t have a dignified life, and we can’t have a dignified death. So ok I guess I’ll have to splatter my brains & guts all over a passing train, traumatize the driver and all the passengers, waste everyone’s time for 5 hours while thousands of man-hours and dollars are wasted cleaning up the gore, all because it’s the only way I can exercise my “freedom”.
Freedom? We have no such thing. “Freedom” is an illusion the rich let us think we have so that we happily become willing slaves.

People tend to be quite conformist (more than Americans like to admit about themselves in my opinion since some of them talk so often about being individualist etc). For the more conservative, it’s a stubborn, traditional kind of comformity. For the liberals, it’s a dynamic type of conformity, in the sense that if a lot of people are pro X or Y, the rest of group will change as well. So if there’s a critical mass within the liberal camp, maybe things will change.
eh, both sides are sheep and both stupid but in different ways. i have no hope either side will “fix” anything.
It certainly contradicts the mantra about individualism and free market choice, say for example a voluntary exchange between a patient and a physician. Some may argue that suicidal people cannot make rational decisions. But others blame suicidal people for wanting to be suicidal. Which is it then? Anyhow, most members of society wouldn’t devote much time or energy to this minority issue anyway.
Another argument is that of “natural” suffering, ie if it would have happened anyway, there is no harm in allowing it. So if a woman were to make her baby genetically short or deformed, that should be regulated against by law. But if she knows she has a genetic deficiency but chooses to have children anyways, the suffering is “natural” so cannot be regulated against.
rules have always been arbitrary- depending on what country, what time period, and who’s in charge.
doesn’t matter if things are “natural” or not. like weed is “natural” but it’s still regulated against.
and yes, i think ppl who have genetic testing showing the fetus is going to have a deformity or some huge issue *should not* be allowed to have that child. i think it’s morally bankrupt for parents to knowing have children who are going to be born with physical and mental disabilities/deformities/etc. that’s a life long sentence.
i had a friend born with cerebral palsy and she herself think it’s criminal to have children knowing at conception/fetus stage that that baby is going to have life-long health problems.
but this will never pass bc of die-hard republicans who refuse to let anyone abort for any reason- and yet once the baby is born, tries to take food stamps and wic away from the parent/child. yeah, there is no logic, only whoever is in power makes all the rules.
