Three was my favorite, it reminded me of an episode of the twilight zone about this guy who they put in a pod to test the effects of long term isolation and he dreams up this town in which everyone is missing, he’s utterly alone in this town that he dreamed up because of the effects of long term sensory deprivation, and of course the effects of long term isolation which really messes people up.
It’s the first episode called “Where is everybody” and in the episode he’s in the pod for 484 hours. Of course the guy is an astronaut so he’s probably undergone some conditioning for such things so he’s not as messed up as a civilian would be under those conditions.
Still, humans don’t do well denied those things.
Shocked the video missed that there was an experiment done about separating infants from mothers, there were actually a series of these done to test attachment which I had to learn about when I was getting my degree. Needless to say they went horribly because infants denied attachment very often die or become anti social, well, they’re too young for it to be called anti social.
They did it mostly with chimps, but I think they did include real children. Still, considering what I found out about chimps and how close they are to us in school I’m not sure I’m okay with humans experimenting on chimps anymore.
Oh my, the history specifically of behavioral science is very dark, but we’re trying to do better these days, at least in my corner of the field. I’m sure somewhere, probably in some country with very lax oversight, there are still horrible experiments happening.
You know that if the world ever is run by machines, and the machines are allowed to experiment on us, the experiments would be absolutely ruthless and awful. I hadn’t thought about this until just now, but it’s a logical conclusion. The way AI is fucking with us already shows exactly what would happen if you give it free reign to tinker with the mind of man.
You control the input, you can absolutely destroy the person. Which is why when AI can create anything, anything at all, it gets really scary. When you can’t be sure what is real, everything falls apart. AI generated video, yeah, that’s scary, but when AI can also correct reality to back up the video it made that’s a whole extra level of terrible.
Are you sure the “behavior sciences “ are “doing better these days “? I suppose relatively. But walk into any psych in-patient ward, and you’ll see oodles of barbaric treatment of patients who are all deemed “mentally ill”. Never mind that depression is a normal response to a shitty and poor life. Oh but take this PILL to numb yourself so you’ll stop complaining. Problem fixed.
I should have limited it to research behavioral science is doing better. I take no responsibility for the current state of applied behavioral science, they wouldn’t have me these days, and I wouldn’t have them. Last time I tried they kicked me out for not changing diapers well enough.
Applied behavioral science is a young man or woman’s game. I mean, I guess if I got my PhD and there was some kind of huge call for my work to be used in the applied side I’d have to square my issues with the applied side, wouldn’t I?
It’s not something I expect to happen, that I become a rock star researcher AND that then I am expected to put my work into practice in private practice….. It somehow isn’t how I think the industry works. It’d be a waste of resources.

Fuck AI.
