I was replying to a comment, but then decided to make a post out of it.
I know this is not a popular opinion, and I know this will never be done in the US, but I really do think we ought to have a license to have children.
If we need to have a license to drink, drive, have a gun, or smoke weed, then at the bare minimum we need a license to do something so important as having children.
There are SO many ppl having kids that shouldn’t. Just one glance at the news and you’ll see so many unfit parents. Not even the narcissistic ones- the ones in the news literally don’t feed the kids and starve them to death, or beat them to death, or throw babies from balconies. I don’t even want to mention the latest horrific stories bc they’re that bad.
And no, it’s not a “few rare cases” anymore. Or a “few bad apples.” The whole cart and apple tree are rotten. A huge swatch of unfit people are having loads of babies. And the poor babies grow up to be depressed af adults with miserable lives.
Very few children of abusive parents- and that includes verbal abuse- grow up to be happy well-adjusted adults.
97% of us are scarred for life. And end up on sites like SP.
It will never happen, but I personally think ppl should be required to have a license to have babies and to pass tests demonstrating they are capable of being good parents. With semi-annual check ins.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve watched so many child Abuse documentaries- and no, CPS barely does anything, and 99% of the time too little too late.
There are MILLIONS of kids being born and grow up in horrible abusive environments. The vast majority are never ever reported.
And that’s not even including the narcissistic ones that verbally and mentally beat down their kids.
Unhappy parents create unhappy kids who grow up to be depressed and unhappy in the vast majority of cases, IG not 95%.
These irresponsible and shitty parents create kids who become Karen’s and Ken’s. Or serial killers. Most serial killers or violent offenders grew up in abusive homes.
Violence breeds violence. Incompetent shitty parents create unhappy emotionally unstable unhappy children who become scarred for life.
Best way to break that cycle is to stop letting shitty ppl pop out more kids.
It can start with something as simple as someone with documented abuse not allowed to have any more children.
Just like someone with a criminal history is not allowed to have guns.
So many documented- not even all but JUST the ones already proven to be abusive by CPS- continue to have more children that they abuse. These ppl have CPS called over and over again with NOTHING being done until the child dies or phases out of 18 so they’re no longer a part of CPSs problem.
Anyhow, nothing will change bc this has gone on for thousands of years. Shitty ppl who have no business having children continue to pop out tons.
Unfit parents should not be allowed to have anymore kids.
If we need a license to buy cigarettes or alcohol, or to drive, then we should have a license to pop out babies.
we should at least weed out shitty ass ppl from procreating and causing more damage to society / future generations.
Yes I know there’s issues with having to get a license to prove you’re capable of being a good parent.
Personally, I think the less humans the better. The unborn ones are the lucky ones to not have to suffer through this shitty life on Earth.

I think a license to breed is a good concept in theory, but you can guess where it would go if put into practice. As always the rich & powerful would get their licenses while the rest of the population gets the shaft (not that that’s a bad thing in this case, the fewer babies the better, but still).
And the rich would use the argument that they have money so they’re more qualified to raise families, but take a look at the number of suicides & deaths of despair among the children of celebrities. Or even if they don’t spiral, look at the way most of them turn out. Selfish elite themselves, just like mommy & daddy, to carry on the bloodline.
All the same though, to me any form of population control, whether with good intentions or whether totally corrupt, would serve a good purpose. I think the ideal human population on this planet should be maybe 1 billion tops. That’s what it was in 1800, and although the 1800s sucked too, there seemed to be an explosion of innovation, philosophy, music, even utopian political ideals, and all the things that seem to represent the best of our species.
I honestly believe the corrosion of the human soul is entirely due to the overcrowding and suffocation we’ve been feeling since. It’s hard to be great when you can’t even breathe.
Ofc it will be used by the rich against the poor. But my point is- if you’re poor, then why TF are you going to imprison and enslave your children to the same chains of poverty or mediocrity that the current generation are enslaved by? Is that not stupid and selfish to pop out babies when you know they’re headed for the same lifetime of struggling with bills, finances etc?
I’m not even talking about middle class here. I’m talking about the poor- which is 50-70% if the US population. 50% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. That is poor. If you are poor, then why in the world would you want to have children that you can’t give anything to? To have a leg up in the rigged race? A poor person spawning children who grow up in poverty and grow up to be adults in poverty have shit lives. Unhappy. A life full of troubles and worries. How is it that Americans are too dumb to understand this concept?
Part of the problem is that most Americans don’t believe they are “poor” or are living in poverty. But if you are living paycheck to paycheck, which at least 50% of Americans are, then you are poor.
Most Americans think they are middle class. They’re not.
Either way, if you’re poor and you can’t provide for your children, why have children?
I grew up in poverty. It is one of the most fucking horrible things in life- so why anyone would purposely put someone, especially their own children in that situation, is beyond stupid.
Yea I totally agree. Poor people should never never nevFUCKINGver have babies. What kind of selfish fuck would create life and imprison it in some filthy squalid hopeless environment from day 1 probably til the end of its life because we all know it’s easier to escape a black hole than to escape poverty.
and yet, it is the poor that have the MOST fucking kids. beyond stupid.
