When someone asks ” Do you get thoughts of suicide?” or ” Do you think of suicide?”
I often say “Yes, but not of committing suicide just in general” I don’t think they believe me when I say that but can’t someone think about suicide in general and not be suicidal?
Educate me on the difference?

One can think about suicide…
From Wikipedia:
“Suicidal ideation is a medical term for thoughts about or an unusual preoccupation with suicide. The range of suicidal ideation varies greatly from fleeting to detailed planning, role playing, and unsuccessful attempts, which may be deliberately constructed to fail or be discovered, or may be fully intended to result in death. Although most people who undergo suicidal ideation do not go on to make suicide attempts, a significant proportion do.[1] Suicidal ideation is generally associated with depression; however, it seems to have associations with many other psychiatric disorders, life events, and family events, all of which may increase the risk of suicidal ideation. Currently, there are a number of different treatment options for those experiencing suicidal ideation.”
I think the difference is that
†Do you get thoughts of suicide?†– suggests that these thoughts are not consciously or purposely created and there may be something creating these thoughts and images outside of your normal conscious thought process –
†Do you think of suicide?†– this would suggest you made a conscious assessment and purposely concluded this as a possible option
it would seem to be a very important and relevant distinction as to how the thoughts and ideas manifest for the therapist to diagnose the specific problem.
suggestion dawg
So Kiara, how exactly are you finding UCLA?
LoL I am the douche bag? I would love to have a game of wits but its bad manners to fight with someone who is unarmed. Get someone to explain that to you if you don’t understand.
