1. You have no idea how much pain the suicidal person is going through. You have no right to decide whether they should suffer or not.
2. You only have control over your own life. Don’t ever try to control someone else’s!
And 3. Who are you, anyway, to decide whether a suicidal person is ready to die yet, is to young or too this or that, to die? You say that suicidal people don’t care about you, for example, how you’d feel if they died and you missed them.
Excuse me? Did you consider how they would feel if they had to continue living in their current situation? Did you? “Oh, I miss so-and-so!” “I didn’t appreciate such-and-such a person killing themselves!” You’re saying that so long as they’re alive it’s ok if they’re suffering, but if they died it’s not ok for you to suffer because they’ve left you behind? Ok selfish “I don’t like suicide”, how about you stop being so selfish too, and let people do what they have to do to live, or die, with dignity. You have to do what you have to do too, so stop your attitude with suicidal people.

I am suicidal. Where I disagree is that is one is young, they havent given it a chance. Things can and do get better. There are so many young suicidal people, that if they all did it…wow! Those people you are referring to, most of them move on with their life and forget about “us” for themost part.
excuse me…I meant…when one is young
From what I’ve seen the quickest people to scream “selfish” about a particular person’s suicide aren’t those who were directly affected by it. For example, Suzy commits suicide, and her sister Joan falls into grief because of this. Joan probably won’t be the first one to blame her sister, Joan’s friends will amongst themselves, because they’re upset that their friend isn’t perfectly fine.
I agree whole heartedly with this post. No person has a right to dictate anothers breaking point. Whe rationally choosing suicide, one must disregard completely others’ opinions.
But suicide Is selfish , and it should be a selfish act. If i chose to commit suicide , it`s because of MY reasons , it`s for MY benefit , it`s about ME, not about anyone else
Ofcourse , the one who blames the suicidal person for beeing selfish is just as , if not more selfish , as that person , the one who blames the suicidal erson , is thinking about HIMSELF …he`s a hypocrite
I don`t think there`s anything wrong with beeing selfish when it comes to making the decision to commit suicide. I do think it`s wrong to be a hypocrite and try to blame someone for beeing selfish from a just as selfish position
I don’t think the problem is so much “that” people call suicide selfish, but WHY they call it selfish, and what they think it means, and that they think that accusing people of being “selfish” is somehow supposed to change something into what they would prefer it to be.
People should be allowed, encouraged, to think of themselves when it matters most.
Then again, once i’m dead, i won’t exist to be conscious to know or care what anyone says, or why. That is the essence of the positive side, the release, relief, the “silver lining,” if you will. Suicide is about freeing oneself from their own tormented futility. Why should anyone NOT do that? There are very few reasons to refrain, none of which are universally applicable.
They’ll feel what they feel, think what they think, say what they say, do what they do; fuck ’em.
There is nothing wrong with being selfish period. It is in our nature and it is there for a reason. You must attend to your own needs. Your own wants. Your own desires. Your own happiness. Because reallying on someone else to does not work for so many reasons. Neither does living to make someone else happy. Seems like many people are here because of these two attempts in futilety.
@ clevername
I think they (the ones who acuse suicidal people of beeing selfish) are actually acusing the suicidal person of not beeing willing to make the sacrifice of living for someone else.
In my experience (i may be wrong , it`s just my experience) , most of the people who take this approach , of calling suicidal people selfish , are religious people who think that self-sacrifice for someone else is the most noble thing someone can do and it`s something everyone should do. At the same time though , religious people don`t actually belive in death (death as it`s in reality , a finality , an end), so (i can only try to immagine how they see it) , in there eyes , suicide is just a way to “move on” to something else
i may be wrong though
“I think they (the ones who acuse suicidal people of beeing selfish) are actually acusing the suicidal person of not beeing willing to make the sacrifice of living for someone else.”
And yet, they totally disregard that very sacrifice, by ignoring all the time and energy already spent(lost) enduring tormented futility. Those others who accuse the suicide of “selfishness” are only thinking of themselves, and not of the amount of sacrifice the suicide has already made/endured, often primarily for the sake of those who end up accusing selfishness.
It is painfully obvious that some people on this post do not know what “selfishness” is….it is NOT considering your needs …it is when you ONLY consider your needs AKA “fuck anybody else”….I can almost guarantee you the suicidal do think about others when they determine what to do and on the libra scales of whats worse….ask yourself if a possible lifetime of misery and pain is worse than a few years (at the most) of grieving? it most certainly is…
*As defined by merriam-websters selfishness is “having or showing concern only for yourself and not for the needs or feelings of other people.”
I also hate when people think the suicidal get some “benefit” from suicide….QUIT ROMANTICIZING IT!!!…..
You lose everything! and gain NOTHING!….the paradox of the suicide is that they have to throw away whatever they might like or enjoy about life to get rid of the overwhelming desperation, sadness, misery, bitterness, self hatred and whatever other negative feelings and emotions they feel…you have to be alive to feel anything so they in fact do not gain anything…in a symbolic way they do…since the absence of suffering is peace but they aren’t alive to feel the suffering that has ended….
Suicide is freeing the self from the self, by eliminating the self that experiences anything. That is the epitome of selflessness: courage and sacrifice.
Confronting fear of the unknown and sacrificing yourself to become eternally selfless… that’s some kind of super-selflessness.
But on the other hand, i guess it’s kinda silly to be upset that people don’t understand, and then hypocritically derogate and disgrace the suicider. People like that are a large part of the reasons why people commit suicide. So it’s people like that who i hope feel the most intense grief. They deserve it! Maybe they know it (once it’s too late), and that’s partly why they act so upset that someone made a permanent choice to disregard their feelings. Or something.
Right on, MichelleJ! I agree 100%
God, I wish we could get these other points-of-view on the issue of suicide more publicity in mainstream media. There is another side to the issue and it is incredibly valid, but the powers that be just won’t let anyone hear them. I think that’s a big reason for the oppressiveness of anti-suiciders against people who want to leave this world.
The irony is that we should feel happy for non-suicidal people. To have an absolute certainty that one’s life is worthwhile… Wouldn’t we all love to be there? And if it weren’t for the fact that most of them tend to be bullies intent on forcing everybody to adhere to their belief system, we probably WOULD be happy for them.
ok i was all about all these comments until that last one clever…you’re joking by calling suicide absolute selflessness, right? you’re getting rid of the “self” but that doesn’t make you the most unselfish being.
