I want you to fear me
Like a nightmare so obscene
I want you to crave me
And then watch me leave
I want you to need me
So I can vanish in the breeze
I want you to touch me
So I can cringe and retreat
I’m lying.
I want you to control me
Like a dream so obscene
I want you to keep me
And never let me leave
I want you to break me
So I crumble at your feet
I want you to touch me
So I can revel in the heat

“I want you to control me”.
Control is, in my opinion, the greatest form of power any one person can wield against another — and in some cases, an entire nation. I was never a control freak; I just had that demeanour about me that said “this is what I want, and you know exactly what to do” and it was prevalent in the workplace, in public and more… intimate settings you could say.
Now I doubt myself more than ever, and have the anxiety of a teenage girl. Oh, how the (supposedly) mighty have fallen. Thanks for… invoking some reflection on my part.
Never doubt yourself, shep. You’re as mighty as ever.
Hey Sams. It’s funny, I woke up with this exact feeling pressing down on me. The ole Cadbury egg phenomenon: tough dark exterior but inside is creamy sweet mushiness. I guess nature designs many creatures this way, because if we were all a bunch of blobs of creamy sweet mushiness then we’d get gobbled up or stepped on or washed off the sidewalk with a hose. But I guess with some of us who realize our own vulnerability we spend a lifetime building up the crunchy exterior so thick that a brontosaurus couldn’t bite through.
Your poem itself is, as always, masterful. Like your last one, the symmetry really works. So visual, the way the 1st half is harsh & ramps up to the turning point and then gets reflected in the 2nd half as a softer, more flowing image. Like looking at yourself in a stream.
As for Billy Mays, I sure miss the guy & his ear damaging voice that always used to drill thru my semi conscious mind at 1:30 am with the tv on. Someone should make a zombie movie where he comes back “but wait there’s more!” *brainchomp*
I would give my life savings to see that movie. -_-
Itd be nice if someone was capable of cracking the shell.
