I got a tarantula. I’d been planning to get one for a while, and today I finally did it. I’m already in love with him, and I’ve decided that he’s another Reason To Live. (It’s been quite a while since I’ve done one of these, huh? Last time, it was my cat, Copper.)
It might seem silly to live for a tarantula, but to me, it makes perfect sense. I’m the only person among my friends and family who likes tarantulas, and even other tarantula fans don’t tend to want males, so if I were to die, no one would take care of this little guy. Who knows what would happen to him.
It’s also nice to have something to nurture and care for. It’s very fulfilling. He’ll never “love” me back, like a cat or a dog would, but still, I love him, and that’s good enough.
He’s a Honduran Curlyhair. Adorable, fuzzy, and small. I just watched him eat a cricket with gusto, and now he’s chilling in his little log hide. The substrate that they gave me for his tank (reptibark) is terrible stuff, not suited for tarantulas at all, so I’m going to replace it soon with something better.
We don’t have a name for him yet, but I’ll think of something eventually.
As for how I’ve been doing since my last update: things are going well, more or less. I’ve been slowly driving D back into dormancy. I’ve also been trying to reconnect with my friends, and make new ones. I’m living on a schedule, now, because I really benefit from routine. Recently, I signed up for my fall courses. I still have bad days, but I’m determined to put my life back on the right track. Everything is going to be okay.

Tarantulas are beautiful and feel great as they walk across your hand. I understand your thinking behind having him. Name him SP. Just kidding.
lol that’d be hilarious
They are beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that I haven’t loved, and I love his species in particular. They aren’t the prettiest tarantulas, IMO, but I’m a sucker for that permanent “bad hair day” look.
Glad you’ve found another reason to live. That’s 2 more than me.
I’m sorry to hear that you’re not doing well.
Pretty cool. I’m not a fan of spiders myself so I don’t see the appeal, but animals are great company in any case. I had a pet hamster who liked to run feverishly on his wheel in the middle of the night. It drove my parents nuts but I’m a deep sleeper so it never woke me up. Now that I think of it, his disappearance was of questionable cause and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was set free
I can understand not being crazy about spiders. I used to be terrified of them.
Anyway, I’m sorry to hear about that. Hamsters are great, although I’ve always hated how short their lifespans are. It’s so sad to see them go.
Part of the cycle of life and death.
Have you got a name in mind yet?
This post really made my day, I ‘m glad to see you’re doing something you’ve really wanted to! As for a name, if you’re a fangirl like me then maybe Aaragog? (From Harry Potter)
Aww, thanks. I’m glad I was able to brighten your day.
As for your suggestion, I never got into Harry Potter, so it would feel a little weird, kinda like wearing a shirt for a band you don’t listen to. But thanks anyway. 🙂
I getchu, that makes total sense- just remember that the tarantula can probably learn to love, and or, appreciate you- I cant wait to his name!
I think spiders, insects and snakes are best to be left in the wilderness. There are plenty of cats and dogs looking for a good home.
That’s very close-minded. Dogs and cats used to be “wild animals” too (and by the way, I’ve already rescued several dogs and cats and can’t take in anymore).
As for “leaving him in the wilderness”, he wasn’t caught from the wild. He was bred in captivity. I’d never buy a wild-caught tarantula.
i had a rose hair tarantula once and her name was charlotte, i had her till the day she died.
that spider meant alot to me and even till this day if my wife sees a spider in the i will come and put whatever spider in my hands and take them outside.
That is so sweet. I’m glad that you do that, instead of killing them.
Also, how long did you have Charlotte? It must’ve been a long while, if you got her when she was young.
It’s not silly at all to live for a tarantula! It’s wonderful and made me feel joy reading it. I remember being just as excited to have a bunny, frogs or even a Venus flytrap! Anything to live for is worth it. Happy for you! Keep going! ??
That was supposed to be a heart at the end, dammit. 🙂
Thanks! I really appreciate that. And you had a Venus fly trap? Neat! I think they’re so strangely cute. 🙂
They are cute! Had Venus flytraps when I was much younger. I was such a dork, I even named it. Haha Thank you for making me want them again.
I’m more of a snake person myself, but good for you!
Snakes are great too! I don’t know if I could ever own one, though, personally. Feeding live crickets to something is one thing, feeding live mice to something is another. I’d have a lot of trouble doing that. But if I could, I’d love to have a snake.
That is awesome!!! I have always been scared of spiders, but he seems not as scary since hes furry lmao.
That’s very cool!
South American tarantulas are kidnapped all the time and brought to North America… by bananas!
