Do I end contact with the few who are close to me before I do it? Do I break up with my boyfriend so he doesn’t hear what happened? I want to do it now but I just want to make sure I’m doing it properly. We live together so it will be hard. He has nothing to do with this, honest.

If you’re completely sure, then I would say yes – the more time and distance they have, the less devastating it’s likely to be (definitely don’t do it in a shared house – it will haunt them.)
If you have any mutual friends, your boyfriend will hear it if anything dramatic happens to you.
Your title is “heartache”, which is often about relationships, but you say your boyfriend has nothing to do with it. I don’t mean to pry, but could you tell us a bit about the problem? No pressure.
