Welcome to 1984. The dystopian world is here. Most newer cars come with cameras, so it’s not just GM, Onstar, or Tesla. How do you know your car is not spying on you?? If it’s a new or new-ish car, it probably is.
Also, everyone who uses Alexa or Siri- they’re definitely listening to everything, 24-7.

newest car I ever drove regularly was a 2014 Jeep, and the computer in that car made my life hell, it was everything wrong with that car, though thankfully it belonged to the company
and the really dumb thing? You can keep an old car going nearly forever. My sedan is an 04, my truck a 96, the only computerized parts are controling combustion. I added an up to date stereo, but that’s it. Why would I want a computer in my car? The mileage gains aren’t worth it, in terms of service costs they don’t pay out. I have a phone, and frankly I keep it on do not disturb most of the time anymore. I’m wary enough being tracked by google, I don’t need to be voice recorded
at a certain point, we can’t use old products anymore. the newer generation of everything is built to NOT last- planned obsolescence. Older products were made with better quality, and built to last. The last 2+ decades of stuff is purposely built cheaply and crappily so you have to replace them every few years.
Oh I know I’m lucky, I had people in my life that helped me get all this set up, and I continue to have people who help me track down parts and labor. There’s a serious issue lately with “right to repair”, Tesla and Apple are two of the worst offenders, but lots of car companies have gone in on it. It used to be any guy with a set of socket wrenches could do most of the stuff on their car. Not now, especially with hybrids and electric vehicles.
and I’m pro environment is the funny bit, if there was a pro consumer brand hybrid or electric model…… ah, fantasy. I don’t drive that much, there are other ways I can make a difference.
Actually keeping an old car going can save a lot of impact to the planet. Most of the time the reason a car is discarded is a 5 pound part, maybe $300, same in labor. People are lazy, though I suppose I can’t blame them. They like the shiny new car, and the insurance companies push them into the new cars. A few years ago a shop got my truck into a wreck, the insurance company tried like hell to get me to total it out, buy a new truck, I refused because there was no way in hell I could get the same truck for the money they were offering.
I’ve replaced 65% of the parts on that damn thing, more of it is new than original, but it still cost me less than if I had bought a new one off the lot the same year I started working on it. Get that? Most of the parts were manufactured new by factories overseas because Ford vehicles never die (almost all owners are sentimental types like me) at the same time new vehicles were being bolted together for three times the cost, and performing almost exactly the same. Torque, horsepower, gas mileage. All the new one has is a nicer interior, which I don’t particularly care for.
Man, capitalism is stupid sometimes.
only sometimes? O_o
I mean, the market still bends to my will eventually, lets me keep my truck running, buy my overengineered boots and blue jeans, there’s still enough that I want that I’m willing to go work in the economy, so, it’s still working
just, only about 20%-30% of it makes any sense at all to me. Like you’re saying, so much is entirely disposable. Like most clothes these days are meant to be worn for a few months. MONTHS…………. that’s insane to me. I still have shirts from decades ago, pants too, and boots.
and sometimes I still accidentally stumble into the wrong market, and it feels so silly, like oops, I’m sorry, I think you thought I was a mayfly live for a second and discard everything type person. My dad and I are almost the same size everything, chances are someone in my bloodline down the line will be too, there’s no reason to plan to throw stuff away. We’re dull people, not rockstars or mental patients which are the only two types of people I can imagine needing disposable clothing
1- not everyone already has a car
2- i believe the article states that all 2018 and newer cars are required to have cameras. so if someone is looking for a car, unless we get a really really old car with 200K+ miles, we’re gonna get a spy car
3- after a certain point, in some years, it’ll be hard finding cars pre 2018 in good condition.
i’m sure you know, even if you keep your phone on do not disturb, your location/movements are still pinged to cell towers every 7s.
but cell phone aside, every time you go online they track you too. google, youtube, fb, ig, etc.
As someone who appreciates being able to custom build a computer and download any kind of operating system on it, or running emulators for older games or repurposing old machines, I hate how everything’s designed with planned obsolescence in mind. I also don’t like how computerized vehicles have become. Sure there’s a lot of convenient things and safety features in those newer vehicles and phones and what not, but I’d prefer just having a vehicle that gets you where you need to go and not be stuffed to the brim with the latest and greatest. I’ve gotten by with older equipment for most of my life, and it helps you learn about keeping your things in good condition as well.
