It is 2:08am and I’ve been in my bedroom listening to my wretched father having a conversation with another man who shall not be named. Every word out of his drunken mouth is like a kick over yet another bottomless cliff.

Just now. It was over something really stupid, a game with my younger sisters. I was pretending to be asleep, they were trying to wake me up. Dad asked if we wanted to go to the pool. I didn’t, so I kept pretending. They mocked me, called me rude, and said they knew I would move from that position as soon as they left. Harmless kid stuff, really. Anyone else feel the pressure to take their life? That life has completely stopped and the pressure from life itself and everybody else is building up? That nothing’s going right or it’s moving too slow? That you’re almost at breakpoint, ready to take the plunge and do something you can’t go back on? I do. When I was 3 I moved from Michigan to Indiana because my parents got divorced.
