Hello everyone. I’m not depressed, nor have I ever been, and I won’t even begin to pretend that I understand how you must be feeling. I’ve been lurking this site for a while, but I thought that perhaps I might recommend some music to you all as a means of coping. I know that it’s not going to fix anything, but the following albums are incredibly immersive, and if any of you happens to be able to fall into one of them for any amount of time then I believe that this post was successful.
Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left/Pink Moon
The Antlers – Hospice
Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Godspeed You! Black Emperor – F#A#(infinity symbol)
Off Minor – The Heat Death of the Universe
Circle Takes the Square – As the Roots Undo
City of Caterpillar – City of Caterpillar

Nick Drake was a folk musician in the 70s with a very beautiful voice and a kind of hypnotic air surrounds his music. He killed himself in 1974, and his albums (Pink Moon in particular) describe isolation and despair quite well.
Hospice by the Antlers is about a man who’s in love with a woman in the cancer ward and follows their relationship. The instrumentation is very lush and full, the story, lyrics, and the music are beautiful.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a great post-rock band. They employ long build ups and crescendos. They are very experimental and it is very easy (for me) to lose yourself in their music.
The last three bands (Off Minor, Circle Takes the Square, and City of Caterpillar) are emo, which means they focus on their emotions as the main lyrical point.
Off Minor has some absolutely incredible lyrics. Their music is basically long, beautiful, flowing jazz parts with some very aggressive hardcore.
City of Caterpillar employs the build ups and crescendos used by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but their climaxes are filled with screaming and emotional desperation.
Circle Takes the Square is a very grandiose album. It is just incredible, the lyrics tell the tale of a man on a journey of self-realization through metaphors and imagery, and I just love it.
I’m big on music so I will have to check them out. I wanted to add to your list, if you don’t mind…
I listen to a lot of random music and just a warning, some of these might be triggering, but I hope they help some of you 🙂
