It’s a hell of a lot better than the ads you’d normally see instead. Myself I’d love it if cities were plastered with things lke this all over. It’s not like cities can get any uglier anyway so anything would be an improvement…
@absurdist – well anything is better than ads! Depends on your point of view… I get defensive about art because bad art gives the whole field a bad name… I don’t feel this kind of art pushes any boundaries or challenges the status quo, just accepts the status quo and embraces a defeatist attitude, which is argueably why ‘we are sad and lonely in a world of glass’. But I would like to know… is this a photoshop job, or was a real sign put up on the bus stop?
I see your point although I don’t agree about this one piece in particular. I would enjoy having things like this to look at at bus stops, it would be a little moment of connectedness so to speak. And yes it was a real sign.
Haha absurdist, we have very different tasts because I can really appreciate the value in the marni kotak performance! It challenges the inherent value that we are all born into, in this world. Even though the art itself is horribly exploitative.
There is this trend, in art, that in order to have any kind of impact, it DOES need to be totally amoral and shocking. Is this an indication of how desinsitised we are? Yup… I blame media…
To be honest I consider that performance as meaningul and useful as a mime troupe trying to do social commentary on gang violence. It’s just so wildly removed from the actual grimy actual reality of raising a kid that it detracts from wathever message you could wring out of it.
Still as radical as our disagreement will forever seem to be on this matter I appreciateyour argumented view so hat off to ya.
Absurdist, at this point we are descending into pure opinion, just want to make that clear before anyone (not you!) gets their knickers in a knot.
I had a better look into that project and she is planning to document and address schooling/health etc issues as she raises the kid.
I part agree with you but I would say that it is the exploitative nature of it that detracts (for me, anyway) from whatever message you could wring out of it.

@one_day
I don’t mind contrasting views and some verbal sparring.
