I would love to believe in a God or a higher meaning, or that memories (or anything for that matter) persist after death. But I can’t. So with that in mind, what difference does it make if I decide to hang myself today or die in 50+ years?
memories do – without doubt or question – persist after our death – but not within our consciousness but within those we leave behind … those people who love us or who have at least interacted with us. they carry on our memory and legacy.
what anything “means” is all dependent on what our values are – everything and everyone is “meaningless” until we assign a meaning and value to it. I highly value the lies of dogs for example – more so than i really value what my family might think if/when I “depart”, therefore, i currently maintain my existence to give them a chance at life.
but – my family will carry on memories of me and of my relationships with them after i’m gone – pictures will remind people of the person i was and people will reminisce about the “woulda, coulda shoulda’s” – i know when my mom and grandparents passed – many of the lessons they tried to each me came rushing back into my mind and I had to reanalyze them – they took on new meaning and importance in my life
so the question is more – what legacy can you build in the next 50+ years? one thing I can assure you is it is very unlikely that at this moment you cannot see all the things you will do in the future to touch the lives of others – but you WILL change people’s lives in that time – but you will change nothing if you exit today – but that is for you to assign value to – just keep in mind the unseen and uncalcuable variables that the future holds that just cannot be account for at this moment.
FYI – i find it a general waste of time and energy to contemplate the value and existence of “god” or the general higher meaning – although it can be a fun and enlightening academic mental exercise – although there are many good social values that can be gleaned from he experience of studying the bible – if for anything else than to understand the how and why the believers/faithful think and apply “logic” in the face of the illogical.
all the best to you – i hope you find value in sticking around for a while to create a positive legacy
Sometimes I feel that way. I suppose you have to have some kind of a will to keep plugging away at it to gain the desire to live or find meaning in life. It doesn’t come as naturally for some as it does others right? I hope you keep striving to find meaning and I’m new here but if you can message me and want to talk, I’ll respond!

Who knows? I sure can’t predict the future.
It would make a difference to the people who care about you.
I do know how you feel, though. I feel the same. I’m trying not to feel that way, but it’s hard for me not to.
