This song was used in the Doctor Who episode Vincent and the Doctor, and as any art lover will know Vincent Van Gogh was famous for suffering from severe depression (he cut one of his own ears off in a manic episode) and committing suicide at the age of only 37 scorned as an artist in his own lifetime…

I think that was my ideal time to opt out, 37 or 38. But as life had other ideas that window of opportunity’s well and truly come, briefly opened and gone…
What amazes me the most about Van Gogh is that even amid all his pain and suffering even though he was only able to sell one painting during his lifetime (and his brother was an art dealer no less). He continued to produce masterpiece after masterpiece, thousands of paintings. Through it all he continued to grow as an artist. As he was losing his mind in relative isolation he was creating some of the most original and beautiful Art the world has ever seen. What a story
I think that’s cuz he was creating art for the right reasons, not to make a buck by filling a gap in the art market but cuz he needed to express himself. Of course he would’ve loved some recognition in his lifetime very much so but the creative impulse was so strong in him he just kept on going creating masterpiece after masterpiece until his inner demons caught up with him and took his life. I find it sad that he never made any money off his paintings during his hard life but smarmy art dealers in following decades made millions, doesn’t seem right to me at all…
So sad too that his brother died shortly after him, at the very least it would have been nice to see him live long enough to witness and benefit from his brothers success, since it was his brother that supported and believed in him when no one else did.
Have you seen this episode of Doctor Who? If not you should I found it extremely moving, powerful and beautiful. It even made me cry it was so sad…
