I cut to relieve stress, rage, pain, and sometimes just because I like how it makes me feel. I don’t always draw blood, but the pain is enough. I don’t like OTHER people hurting me. If I, say, fell in some gravel (which I have) its not the same feeling of satisfaction as if I was cutting myself. I know there may be some self harmers who are also masochistic, but in general, if you’re someone who self-injures, would you call yourself a masochist? What are your thoughts? This question struck me today, and now I’m very curious to get some other opinions.

STAR LOVE,
Anytime you cut yourself you are mutilating yourself, now a plastic surgeon is a different story.
Star, when I used to cut I didn’t do it because I liked the pain. I felt like it helped cope. I don’t think it’s the same as masochism.
Now, though, I’ve found better ways to cope, so I don’t need cutting anymore. 🙂
I accept your perspective, rocketman, but self-harm is not to mutilate, its a coping method that works (albeit an unhealthy one). How is plastic surgery different, it just changes something your uncomfortable with. If you have a medical problem that’s different, but if you say, get a nose job, its just changing your nose so it looks ‘prettier’. And self-harm is cheaper.
If society demonized it less (and I’m not saying it doesn’t have its demons) I’m sure that scars from cutting could be fashionable. It’s all based on personal perspective.
Self-harm has a cost. Your skin will never look pretty again. The untouched snow when it first falls, the uncut hands of a teen, the clear sky in the summer – I believe those things to be the most beautiful things of all. That’s just my opinion though…
I just said that to try to get you to stop cutting dirty trick I know. And people that sword fighter in the old days worn there scars on their faces like medals very fashionable.
I’m a tad masochistic and it’s pretty difficult to draw a line between self harm and masochism.
I’d say, if you’re cutting yourself for the sole purpose of the pain it brings, then possibly.
Otherwise, I doubt it.
Generally speaking it isn’t the same, although the two may merge.
Thanks for all your thoughts, guys. I agree that unmarred skin is beautiful.
