I love watching the food network because 1. I have no life and tv is my friend and 2. Who doesn’t love looking at foodporn?
But lately I get uncomfortable with certain shows because they just thrive on being mean. On this show, Restaurant:Impossible, it seems like this guy is trying to imitate Chef Ramsay and it’s making me really uncomfortable. I just hate when people are mean to each other. Even though it’s already been filmed, I still cringe when he’s ripping someone apart and can’t imagine how that would feel. Also, Chopped is so thrilling, watching them try and put together a meal on such specific ingredients, but even competition makes me uncomfortable at times. I understand it’s human nature to compete but do you guys think there’s a correlation between being suicidal and being averse to competition?
But food network still rocks and there are a bunch of shows where they can focus on food and not rip each other apart.

Most of those shows have the “asshole” there on purpose….it attracts viewers ….for some reason people are more drawn to the negativity or an “asshole” more than a person who is more docile and nicer…..I would compare it to american idol…. not the present day but the early seasons….who were viewers most attracted to? Simon…because they know he is an asshole who rips people to shreds…..remember Paula and Randy were the “nice” judges but Simon was the asshole dickhead who use to literally send people off the stage in tears….
I don’t know if there is a correlation … I could think of reasons why it would be but then there are also reasons why it wouldn’t be as well
i don’t watch much tv but i do like Chopped
PainNlife They THINK we like that…but how many people really like to watch that? I know I’m sensitive and maybe that’s why it affects me more but I’m pretty sure the majority of other beings don’t like watching cruelness. But that’s an idea I didn’t think of, that people might actually like it.
Chopped is a great show, it’s fun watching what people come up with
competition is a killer. i dont bother anymore with it
I only compete with myself. Except when playing chess, but that doesn’t count as there is no competition. 😛
I actually tend to be the same way with competition and meanness – I dislike it. Were it up to me, I’d only spend time with people who were friendly and just as obscenely childish as I can act (not in a bad sense – think more, the curious kid who found a caterpillar), but the world is full of people who want to turn everyone into little reflections of their own worst qualities.
I also love to cook, though I’ve never watched any cooking shows on TV. That might actually be something worth checking out, though, as I’m always frustrating myself by not being able to come up with new meal-ideas.
Both of my sisters are obsessed with reality TV shows, to the point where that’s basically all they watch anymore – the more grossly absurd, the better. If I happen to walk into the room while they’re watching one, I usually have to compulsively wash my eyes and ears out with bleach just to feel less tainted by the sheer weight of dumb that’s collided into my head.
@scarredkitty…. sadly it doesn’t matter because they are trying to appeal to the majority…..and the majority of Americans like negativity and assholes…. Think of any sit com or reality T.V show…..usually the most popular character is the one that is the most mean or the biggest asshole….
I don’t watch a lot of shows on the food network…..I watch a show sometimes with the guy with the blond spiked hair I think its called “american diner” ….. I watch cupcake wars sometimes too….I also watch Bizarre foods but it doesn’t come on the food network
