Well 1st we must consider if you even want to put the knife down….if you do….then….allow yourself to put it down……if not…..then you must find out why you want to hold the knife….
If your intention is to stop cutting, putting the knife down is not enough. You need to get rid of it completely. Dispose of all your cutting instruments (razors, knives, needles, w.e.).
You may try replacing the pain of cutting with another, less harmful, pain such as exercise. Or, you could try replacing the relief you get from cutting with something entirely painless. When you feel the urge to cut, go talk to someone, go for a walk, take a shower, play a game, workout, do whatever it takes to get rid of that stress, and while your abstaining from cutting, try to figure out the root of your problem: that is, why you began cutting to begin with.
