I am currently struggling with self harm and being on the internet a lot, i constantly see pictures of scars and wounds from self injury.
I was just wondering whether to other people self harming or in recovery, these pictures trigger you and make you want to self injure, or they put you off it and make you feel bad for ever using it as a coping mechanism?
Sorry if you don’t understand, my thoughts can get confusing.

i cut occasionally but hate seeing pictures of it. i think it looks horrible and gross. but i don’t actually think that of the people who do it, because i obviously understand. they don’t necessarily put me off cutting but they do make me feel gross
Dear smash2204,
Everyone in one way or another inflicts self harm. It is not just with knives, razor, irons that we hurt ourselves. we also inflict emotional scars with wants built on false needs, we speak hurtful words and ignore our fellow humans that are in need. The lists of self harm are endless and we all have our personal ‘favorites”. Many of us use these favorites as a badge of courage. with that badge of courage our egos feed off it and grow.
We all use methods to cope. Belittling others, spread rumors, lies, cheat and the list goes on. It doesn’t matter what technique we use to cope. The feeling better after harm always fizzles out. Until it grows out of control or we get board of it then take on a new way of coping.
The reason behind why we need to “cut” needs to be addressed, Before we can recover from the “cutting”. If you stop “cutting” you will need to fill that void with something else. I would like to say words, would be a good start. But words will not necessarily work after time either. That could lead to depression because you may believe no one listens, no one cares, or you are not good enough with words.
I do suggest using words though, while tiring to address the underling challenges of the past. A chain of events brought you to this place in life and a chain of events can heal you too.
