I have a few, they change as much as my moods. I listen to such a broad range of music from the Doors to Gomez and beyond.
Through high school I would hide my interests because my music wasn’t cool. I had a few NWA and Eazy-E cassettes, but would always go back to my favourites.
The Beatles-Anything Revolver and beyond, Here comes the sun because I always wait for the sun to come up when I’m feeling suicidal. The sun lights the world and exposes what the moonlight and darkness of night hides. She said she said, tomorrow never knows, something, Lucy in the sky with diamonds, heaps more
The Doors- Pretty much everything they released, Universal Mind, Waiting for the sun
Metallica-Fade to black, Orion, call of the ktulu, creeping death, wherever i may roam, plenty more
Nirvana-Drain you, radio friendly unit shifter, lithium, very ape, heaps more
Fear Factory-Timelessness, resurrection, self bias resistor, zero signal, pisschrist, and more
David Bowie-Ashes to ashes, star man, life on mars, spaceoddity, man who sold the world
U2, INXS, Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Gomez, Offspring, Grizzly bear, Pantera.
There’s a few others, but its getting rather long as it is. I believe that music has the power to change a mood, calm a person, motivate and inspire.
Your tastes could be my exact opposite, all good, I’m just curious as to if and what music helps with your depression and moods.
Hopefully I get a large response.
Cheers in advance.

I used to listen to kinds of rock/metal with depressive lyrics, not sure if you want some of these.
Now i actually got into electronic types of music and it kind of helps a lot more, because the loud music and sound effects and the way everything mixes is really distracting and very addictive.
Cool. I could never get into electronic, but I love the synthesisers of the 80’s. Vienna by ultravox, sunglasses at night, safety dance, Blondie, Kate bush.
I don’t mind listening to depressive lyrics, its humbling to know that these successful musicians have the same demons that we have.
If you could or can be bothered, check out the lyrics for timelessness by fear factory, its unreal. Really well put together.
I can’t go past metal, alternative and my old hippy stuff. It means so much to me, some of the music and bands that I love.
I don’t care what people listen to, as long as they are passionate about it.
Cheers for replying.
I don’t really know much bands so i’ll look some of these up.
If you want some examples of the depressive songs i mentioned,
Erase me by Elysion, Tourniquet by Evanescence.
Icon For Hire is a pretty nice band too, “Get Well” is a nice song of theirs.
I found this channel on youtube called MonsterCat that has a lot of nice Electro, Trance and all of the similar types of music, there’s a really good musician there called Tristam, he has really nice ones especially one called “Frame of mind”
“Tool” and “A Perfect Circle” did it for me personally.
There’s also “Deftones”. Hope these are good for you
Cheers, I’ll have a look.
There was a drum and bass duo I liked, but only because they played the drums and bass, it wasn’t on a synthesiser.
Timelessness is very depressing. Sometimes a depressive song can lift your mood and make you feel a little better.
Soundgardens fell on black days is another.
Love tool. Eulogy would be my favourite. Schism. I didn’t get into perfect circle but I like puscifer.
Henry Rollins, black flag. They’re a bit more hardcore,
Is Maynard still running a winery?
I was never allowed to listen to music when I was a kid. When I was a teen I started to listen to some, but any time I mentioned something I liked, I was always told it was crap and that I had bad taste in music. To this day I listen to some stuff on rare occasions, but find that I really don’t enjoy it because I keep hearing from the voices in my head that it is crap. Other people I work with are into their music and play instruments for enjoyment, and one is even in a band. When someone puts on music at their desk, I just put on my headphones to deaden the sound. I never listen to music, I just put my headphones on to make them and their music disappear. Silence is my escape, not music.
That’s a real shame. Music is a very powerful influence and should be enjoyed by all. Everyone told me my music taste was crap, but I ignored them and listened to whatever I wanted.
Hopefully those voices stop and you can get past your previous experience and find some music that you truly love and admire. There’s nothing more therapeutic than escaping into really good tunes.
This is a song that has helped me over the years…
Hold on for one more day by Wilson Phillips
The song begins…
“I know this pain
Why do lock yourself up in these chains?
No one can change your life except for you
Don’t ever let anyone step all over you
Just open your heart and your mind
Is it really fair to feel this way inside?”
Another song that is good…
Just Breathe by Anna Nalick
One lyric…
” Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable,
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button, boys,
So cradle your head in your hands,
And breathe… just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe”
Its humbling to hear musicians and successful artist deal with the same issues that we face and feel.
Thanks for sharing, great choices.
