My honest opinion: If someone wanted to off themselves, they would have done it already. People are posting here for a reason: They are still reaching out and searching for hope, purpose, meaning and a reason to go on (even a thread of it).
Why do we or should we care so much about life? There is value in life and only one of you. Everybody is here for a reason. And once you are gone, you are, like gone … Forever. It’s about as permanent as it gets.
Although, there are still modern miracles of people coming back after being pronounced dead, but it’s quite rare in my experience.
I can sorta see that, though you also have to factor in the people who don’t off themselves almost exclusively out of a fear of “what dreams may come”. I’m one of them.
I have trouble seeing why so many people believe that. “We’re all here for a reason” or “we all have a purpose” or whatever. Don’t get me wrong, I agree. I believe that BS too. But I’m a delusional kid. I’m SUPPOSED to believe in silly things like that. I don’t get why so many other people do, though.
I do, however, have no trouble understanding your other point, that there’s only one of each of us that’ll never occur again. That is actually a really good answer to my question, I think.
I don’t think we are trying to avoid death, but it’s the bad feelings associated to the idea of suicide the ones that are being questioned and treated. And what some of us are trying to know is that if we don’t die, could suffering be increased? Or if things remain the same, would this numbness be unending?
I don’t think it’s about preventing suicide, but to try to differentiate between death and peace of mind and avoiding to make things worst with a failed attempt.
There’s a lot of insecurities about this subject, and so many uncontrollable factors that I think deserve consideration, that you better get support to face them…
I guess it’s built into us as animals to fight for survival, whether it’s our own or another person’s. But for me, if it’s someone I don’t know, it’s usually because I hope they might reach a point someday where they’d be glad to be alive.
We’re always told that suicide *is* bad though. People lay a lot of guilt on suicidal people, and it probably affects the way a lot of us think about it. I wouldn’t bring the word moral into it but it would definitely be a bad thing for others if I did it. There’s a lot more to it than me dying. A lot of people have others relying on them being here. But mainly for me it’s the idea that people might get better. I think quite a lot of people feel that way, because people are always fastest to try to talk younger people out of it – usually they haven’t been suicidal for as long and there’s a higher chance of it being temporary.
I usually chalk it down to selfishness, we don’t want to lose the people that we love, so we create a society where it isn’t allowed. Also, Trix has a point with the instinct to survive, the very first thing we do in any situation is try to survive, it’s hardwired into us.
Perhaps we don’t want to lose those we care about. Perhaps we don’t want to imagine those we care about going through pain great enough to make them consider it.
If I want to feel exceptionally pessimistic I’d say people always want to feel superior to others, and the suicidal make an easy target.
If we’re talking specifically about ourselves, those of us who feel an actual desire to kill ourselves, maybe it’s grasping at whatever shred of hope we can muster; a beckoning thought that somehow, someway, continuation could be something other than what it is now.
Might be wrong here, but i’ve never actually seen good and bad being completely linked to the “moral” system, mostly because morality in itself is highly subjective. What’s good for someone is not good for someone else. That said, suicide is a personal choice, and it would be “bad” imho to take away that choice from someone. At the same time, i find it perfectly understandable if someone wants to take his/her own life, but that doesn’t mean that i won’t try to avoid it if possible. Why? because my belief system tells me that for some people things can actually change, and i’d actually feel like a horrible person (due to my morals) if i didn’t try to help at least a bit, whenever i can.
I guess that what i’m trying to say is that it makes sense that people try to help improve a situation, even if they’re ok with the final outcome if the situation doesn’t improve. No idea if any of that made sense but hey, long day here, and i should be trying to sleep instead of replying to posts that are way over my head, lol.

Right now I’m too tired to keep thinking deep thoughts, after 10 hours of work. I may revisit this post tomorrow.
Alright. I’ll keep an eye on it in case you decide to.

That’s how I see it at least.

I don’t have an answer to this tonight.
