I’m 67 and a father. Please listen. I don’t know how old you are, but don’t run away. Pick a place to go. Think about what you will need to get there and pack it. Tell a couple of friends about it. They don’t need to know where you are, but they do need to know what you’re doing. Make sure anyone who depends on you is sheltered, bathroomed, and fed. Leave a note announcing what you are doing to your family, bosses, etc. Then leave.

Hit the road. Live your own life for a while. A destination is simply a point you aim for. If it changes on the way, that’s fine. Being a coot, though I’ll tell you this: a knife and money are not what you need to bring. I don’t know how long you plan to stay gone, but shoes and socks are as important as money. Being on the road means standing or walking in the rain if you’re at it for any length of time. I don’t know what you mean by “money” but you can only take cash. A credit card is good, but don’t use it to spend money. If you need to be fished out of a crack, then you buy something with it – and you’ve just told everybody right where you are. And, for tweet’s sake, be careful what kind of knife you’re carrying. A pocket knife is useful for cutting things without being much of a threat to anyone. Something like a kitchen knife marks you as prey, and something like a Bowie knife marks you as prey to have fun with.

Coot lecture over. Go. Have an adventure. From the way you describe your family, I’d bet they’ll welcome you home when you return.
