Last night I kind of felt pushed into a corner about this thing. I talked about it before, essentially I worked hard prepping a schedule for the spring and my university decided to undermine it by canceling a class that I have to take, which I also already paid to rent a book for…. I’m pretty mad about all of this because this is the second time in the same year they’ve screwed up my schedule by doing the same thing.
So I slept fitfully, bad dreams and anger always near the surface.
I went back to school to improve myself to the end of stopping being exploited. It isn’t that there’s something wrong with trading my work for money, grades, whatever. That’s mercantilism and eventually capitalism which is how the western world works. My complaint is the perception that there are expectations on me to put out quality work or suffer consequences, yet if my employer/organization profiting off my work/person in power over me fails to provide their end of the agreement there aren’t consequences. There’s no protection for me from being exploited.
My point is don’t try to pull out. The systems around education or employment are broken, they don’t know how to stop hurting employees, students, customers. We’re not in a relationship to benefit from them, we’ve set ourselves up to be their victim, the target for their abuse. The best anyone can do in this situation is to drop out….
