I had a rough day today. I am choosing to see the good in this world. I am choosing to see the good in my life. I am choosing to see the good in myself.
If you think about it, whatever goes on inside your head is in the service of a higher goal: your organism’s (or ultimately, your genes’) survival in the surrounding environment. Your brain’s higher functions evolved relatively recently. Whatever you think – or don’t think – only matters insofar as it serves or doesn’t serve to let you thrive under the given circumstances. Pessimism – expecting the worst – is useful in that it opens your eyes to potential risks. But it’s less helpful if it keeps you from doing actually harmless things.
You might say what you think also matters because of consciousness, so it matters in terms of how it colours your unique experience. But bear in mind that that whole experience evolved because it was useful – not because it brought happiness.
