My brother’s autistic, and as a kid something the doc that diagnosed him said stuck with me. He showed my mom a pen, and asked her what it was. ‘A pen,’ she said. Then he showed it to my brother, and asked him what it was: ‘A black line.’ Then he said that my brother’s interpretation wasn’t incorrect, it was just not the answer he was looking for. My brother thought differently than us. He could see things in a way we couldn’t. So who did we think was the disadvantaged one between the two of them, my mom or my brother?
This really had an impact on me. Just wanted to share it. Sure, it made my brother’s life tougher than it needed to be, but he was also endowed with something special.
