By “doing something with their lives” I don’t necessarily mean doing something meaningful. Most people aren’t doing anything meaningful at all. By “doing something” I mean just that- they’re doing something. Like putting their artwork on a website that puts it on their products and sells it, even if it’s crappy artwork and only 2 people buy it. But they have done something, even if it wasn’t meaningful or lead to anything.
Or like that porn star turned YouTube/Instagram star. She doesn’t do jack other than post hundreds of selfies of her tongue sticking out. It’s completely useless but she’s become an internet star and making $$$$, so she’s done “something with her life.”

Sometimes, but then other times it doesn’t seem like anyone is doing anything of significance.
The thing is; meaningful work relies on the participation of others. Absent that, hopeless.
