19 Lies You Were Told as a Kid—That You Probably Still Believe
Adam and Eve ate an apple
“We see it in artwork, in TV shows, and movies that the forbidden fruit Adam and Eve ate referenced in the bible was an apple, right? Not so much. It is never actually referred to as any specific fruit. Many theologists theorize that, given the other geographical landmarks referenced, the fruit was likely a pomegranate or fig.”
Holy cow, I’m not religious but I just assumed there was an apple in the bible in the Adam and Eve story, bc that’s just what we’ve all been told, everywhere. Religion aside, it’s insane how stuff that isn’t definitive is said and written as the truth.
Why don’t they tell us “the apple was never mentioned but we THINK it’s a pomegranate or fig” rather than tell us it is an apple when nobody fucking knows what it is.
This is literally the first time I’m hearing this. Again, I’m not religious so whether it’s an apple or fig doesn’t matter to me. The point is that we’ve all been told this as fact, that it’s in the bible when in reality the apple isn’t mentioned in the bible at all, and the fruit is all a guess.
Or like how the ancient Mayans sacrificed humans so the rain gods would bring them rain and good crops. Yes, that was TAUGHT to us in school when I was a kid. Like as a complete and definitive FACT that they did it. All horse shit. It’s one thing if they told us “we think this went on” or “we believe they practiced human sacrifice” but no, things were always taught to us as if they were FACT and you weren’t allowed to disagree and were marked wrong on tests if you didn’t believe it.
Btw, I’m not talking about old wives tales about swallowing seeds and it growing inside us. I’m talking about what was actually TAUGHT to us in schools. As FACT.
I was literally taught #5 in science class also:
“Your tongue has different sections for different tastes”
We were forced to repeat this as fact, on tests we were marked as right or wrong.
Or the Food Pyramid. That has been debunked as a falsehood.
Also, stuff like the Pilgrims, thanksgiving, Columbus and all that we were taught as kids- all lies. They knew they were lies too, but we weren’t told the truth.
When we were kids (I grew up PRE-internet)- we couldn’t look up stuff online and find out the facts for ourselves. All we had were teachers telling us what the govt wants us, and libraries/books and newspapers and radio. That’s right folks, that’s all we had.
If you were an independent journalist, you didn’t get published. What was published were only things that were *allowed* to be published.
Now the younger generation might not understand this since y’all grew up with the internet at your fingertips, but it’s fucking insane how much of everything we’ve been lied to about. Ok, so even with the internet age, we are still being lied to about stuff, BUT at least we can all search for stuff, search for contradictory or conflicting narratives, or search to see if there’s any evidence of what is claimed. At least we now have access and have a choice as to what we listen to.
