I’ve noticed something about this site. Maybe it’s not so much the site but the people behind the aliases – when someone posts here and we pick up the notion that they are serious about going through with ending their life or at the least in very significant pain and anguish we rally around them like elephants do when a pack member is in distress.
I don’t use the analogy of elephants in a negative way – in fact to the contrary. What they do is born of compassion, of high intuition and empathy; it is a matter of survival for all. Most of us are here for the same primary reason – to express feelings of hopelessness and despair, and do so when we have no where else to turn. Yet when someone makes it known they are in real distress people gather around and try to lift them up and encourage them to give life another chance.
This means that many of you can step away from your own pain long enough to give of yourselves to another. And I have to say that is no small feat. It means that there is hope; it means that you are of high intellect and above all greatly compassionate. And yes, these traits of character go hand in hand with the same issues that drive us to despair because we are highly intuitive – we figure things out and it is nearly impossible for someone with such abilities to fall into being “dumb and happy”.
I don’t know who had the first notion to create a site with such a volatile topic but I am thankful they did. And I am grateful for everyone that posts and responds in such honest (and sometimes brutal) terms. We fail more than we succeed – this is our very difficult and truthful foundation. But many of you are the timbers that shore us up time and time again.
I appreciate all of you for what you share, good or bad. And more than any of you will know.

That’s an awesome observation. Thank you for sharing.
This is an outstanding post!
Aww at times it is true we all need a little comfort n to dig deep into each other to help overcome each other’s pain sorrow misery and I hope everyone is doing great I’m ok myself just the same shit for me though I hate it
I registered to this site just to reply to this post. I usually just read. But I just want to say thank you.
So very true noZmoking, and beautifully expressed. This should be stickied if there is such a thing here! You corroborate everything I feel and experience on this site. The elephant analogy is just inspired. The elephant is a symbol of wisdom in some cultures I believe…what marvellous, gentle giants they are.
We are on the edge ourselves, yet we will basically bust a gut to pull someone else back from the brink. It truly does give you hope for humanity. I feel such love for many of the people here. No, they’re not ‘dumb and happy’ and so much the better, when they are capable of such compassion and sensitivity. It’s life-affirming to witness and be a part of. I’m so grateful to whoever invented this site, and the freedom they give us to speak about this ultimate taboo topic.
Sp’ers, whomever you may be, I’m proud and privileged to know you! Thank you for sharing your secrets and stories with us. Much love goes out to you all.
I probably dangle on the bad side more often than the good. It’s kind of a personal curse – I’m not a big people person, so relating has never been one of my strong points, but I do get what you mean and tend to agree. It’s good to have a place like this, and I know it’s meant a lot to a lot of people down the line for the reasons you’ve set out in your post.
Intelligent and piercing. Thank you to the makers of the site and to all the people contributing and helping each other out. In most cases, we’re all we’ve got.
