I thought that I had this great job and finally things were getting better for me. But this wonderful job turned into a nightmare. I worked with selfish horrible people that were extremely unfair. I was asked to cover a position while they hired someone this was back in may. They never hired anyone and I’ve had to work 8 hour shifts and 13 hour shifts with no lunch break. I worked 13 hour shifts for a month straight and I had reached my limit. I spoke to my boss and let her know that I was unable to cover the position and she said she understood and that she would find someone else that I shouldn’t have to keep covering. I showed up today for my usual shift time I was hired for and they fired me. I asked why they said because I decided on my own that I wasn’t working downstairs and they didn’t like how I showed up at my ACTUAL hired positions time instead of continuing to cover the other shift. I don’t even know what to say like wow!! I’m not sure what I can even do the HR person was present during all this and said nothing. The labor laws for my state only specify just cause to file a case if it’s based on discrimination of some sort or retaliation and so on. So I have no idea what to do but this is extremely unfair and I feel very unjust. I had spoken to the boss and then today it was as though I made it all up in my mind. I got fired for not being able to cover a different position than the one I was formally hired to do.

Its sad that so many people are short sided with emotion and so cold at the same time. Almost as if you touch them they wouldn’t react- they wouldn’t notice. there is no feeling. Isn’t it funny that when people cant take the blame themselves for something they did, humans change it into a manipulative mind game. Cowards. I don’t know advise on your situation, but i can definitely provide support. Don’t be afraid.
Not sure where you are located but pretty sure there is no place in existence where 13 hours with no breaks is allowed, so I would double check what you said about having no option to file a complaint outside of situations where discrimination is involved. Labor laws exist everywhere about working fair hours and getting breaks.
Sometimes in situations like this it’s easiest to just accept the BS and walk away, but if you’re at all inclined to seek some sort of justice for what happened then you should. That HR person should be fired and it’s totally illegal that you lost your job because of pointing out to your boss that you couldn’t work that many hours and then showing up for your normally scheduled shift. Depending on what your weekly total amounted to, you should have been getting paid overtime too.
I’m sorry they did that to you. It sounds like a group of idiots and sounds similar to work experiences I have had where they are too cheap to hire enough people so they just work everyone like slaves.
Even just to annoy them you should find some work attorney in your area and send them a lawsuit haha.
I completely agree with Specter. How they treated you is completely unjust. I would at least consult with an attorney and see what advice they give you.
It sucks this is how all business operates. The only thing that matters is money the bottom line. They don’t care about people. People might as well just be factory produced robots, for all the compassion that any of these greedy companies show.
I’ve been a similar situation where I was in a work position that many would envy, however the people in that field made it a stressful environment. Almost a toxic environment. I chose to walk away and although it was maybe not the best financial decision it was required to keep mentally well.
If you had described your workplace and omitted the firing part I would have suggested the idea of leaving and looking for a workplace with people that you wanted to be around.
Although for all the wrong reasons maybe their decision will force you to start that search.
Some of the above comments suggest seeking justice. You may have grounds for that however you have to ask yourself if it is worth spending the time and energy fighting to prove any wrongdoing and prolonging the time spent experiencing something unpleasant.
Some might argue that if the people involved did this to you then they could repeat it with another employee. In this instance you have to ask if it worth standing up to them in an effort to change their behaviour, although I think you should consider what is best for you.
I don’t have all the facts however I can empathise and hope that it’s resolved quickly.
