Lately, I have watched a decent amount of TV because (because of my depression) I have not been able to concentrate on reading (though I’ve tried really hard) and it doesn’t bring me joy because I can’t read a lot anymore, and because I like watching TV with a certain family member as the thing we do together. Recently though, a different family member condemned this and said not to watch so much TV-limit it to, like, two nights a week. But I have no friends, I hardly get out of the house, I can’t read/write/draw, and watching TV sometimes brings me joy. Is it bad that I watch TV? Now I feel guilty, but I just don’t know what else to do with my time-when I have it, at least. I know I should be doing something productive, but…

Hi VNG, I hope ur doing a little better today?
I cannot say if watching a lot of TV is bad but for me I noticed myself droning out in front of the tube a lot. A lot a lot and I deemed that bad for me. so much so that I took down my TV and packed it away for about 3 weeks and I still don’t watch it like I used to. I can’t say I do too much either but I think it allowed me to just find some things to do rather than sit and sulk as my mind morphed in pudding. I think it helped me, just thought I’d share
Good luck
Personally I would say its not something you should feel guilty about. Like you said because of depression you don’t have the energy, focus, or motivation to do anything positive anyway. Watching tv can be a good distraction. It gives your mind something to focus on for awhile. Gives you a break from the negative thoughts. So yea when you are depressed anything that makes you happy and gives you a temporary escape is a good thing.
Wouldn’t disagree with that. It’s probably worth noting I live alone and rudimentary tasks were more likely to be completed, dishes, laundry, shaving, what else was I to do?
Yea that is a consideration. If it is keeping you from doing the daily tasks that need doing. That can be a problem.
Like with anything, it’s about moderation. TV is pretty much all bullshit mindless entertainment, especially the “news”. But everyone watches some tv. Just mix in something else, whatever you can.
