I’m pretty sure once you’re in deep shit you wouldn’t look at some who is sitting on shit and think “I should help that guy”. If you want to help others first you need to help yourself.
Being selfish doesn’t necessarily mean being bad or being unable to help others. I am selfish: I like helping people, but when I do it I know that I am helping myself. I feel very good when people with a problem come to me asking for help or asking for an advice for example, makes me feel that I am valuable to them somehow, that they trust me. And isn’t this why we live — to be with one another?
Also, it’s not true that you necessarily have to help yourself before being able to help others. More than once I was only able to start helping myself after helping others. By helping them and seeing that my help was working for them, I saw I had the strength to help myself too.
I’ve seen people taking up volunteer work who needed more help than the ones they were trying to help. Truly one hand helping another, and this is beautiful.

Survival of the fittest?
Because we are all selfish deep down inside
We can’t help it right? Does this selfishness help/serve us better than being unselfish/altruistic?
