There’s this paradigm that demands we all remain informed. . . that prudent decision making requires current knowledge, and to acquire knowledge requires information. Tell someone you don’t pay attention to, or don’t watch the news, and often they will spout the obligatory cliches, often they will stumble and babble a response that is pointless. So, now that CNN has informed the world that white European colonists murdered endlessly which ultimately affected the atmosphere, what are we supposed to do? Should I write a letter? Commission a mural? Meditate? Go bowling? Now that I’m informed, the possibilities are seemingly endless.
What is going to change? How will tomorrow become better? What issues will be solved? How will any of this pointless mainstream media drivel affect anything real.
Yeah – it wont. Someone just had to earn a paycheck, so they came up with this junk. “And that’s the way it is.” – W. Cronkite.
Good old Walter Crankcase, as I called him. Yep, those producers hope that many of the masses will pay with their time , emotions, and purchasing decisions to view this stuff and pay for it all to to be produced.
I avoid the mainstream drivel. I carefully select my news so that it benefits me. Oh, what if a big war breaks out or the mother of all storms is approaching? Somebody will tell me.
About 20 years ago I took a challenge not to view are listen to any newscast for a month. Also, I avoided the newspapers. At the end of that month I realized I had not been murdered, mugged, shot at, robbed, raped, involved in an auto accident, scammed, treated with gross injustice, or suffered a horrible disease even once. Not even once. Yes this stuff happens but I no longer have to “experience it” unless it is actually happening to me. Sure we need to be informed but when it comes to mainstream (or driveby) media, I take in small doses only.
My mood has greatly improved since imposing a media boycott upon myself a few months back. The stuff we’re fed by the media is poison with a capital P in terms of what it can do to your psyche. Yet for the most part we’re conditioned to devour it because we MUST BE informed. Chuckle. Like you said, if Martians land at the white house, a stranger will be more than happy to let me know. I’m using an I Pad at my new job and a page with news headlines is readily accessible and when I saw this. . . Columbus and global warming. . . blew a gasket. And to watch the anchors deliver this garbage with such passion. . . makes me wonder how they can sleep.
The popular news is just that. It is the news that gets the most views or highest ratings and then the revenue that follows. Much better to pick your own. Otherwise they are picking it. Despite sometimes flowery rhetoric, they are interested most in their own careers/incomes/causes/agendas.
Once I learned to find my news myself it has been quite beneficial. Once I got off the mass media/driveby news my mood improved too. I later learned that even history is often couched in emotional terms that can be unduly stressful. This too can be worked around to a better effect if need be.
FWIW, the less I worry about global warming the more energy I have to do a little something about curbing it.
Hi Once,
I agree with you that you can’t trust all news. Most news companies, whether through television, print, or websites are competing with each other to gain views and money.
However, there is a real issue in the United States and elsewhere regarding the legacy of Christopher Columbus. Columbus is partially responsible for the destruction of indigenous people in the Americas (I say partially because there are more explorers to blame.) And this man gets a day to celebrate him while ignoring his horrific actions? If more (hopefully credible) information is released that proves Columbus doesn’t deserve the heroic legacy given to him, I’m all for it. In my opinion, Columbus Day should not exist, and one goal of this story may be to have readers stop and think about why we celebrate this man.
We need to stop celebrating historic figures who’ve done more harm than good. I understand that the legacy of Columbus wasn’t the point of your post, but there is a benefit to staying informed and making our own judgements regarding what we think is true.
Thanks Hioneh for sharing this. I was actually completely unaware of these facts, but I have to admit, not surprised by them. It seems that part of exploration involves conquering and destroying in the name of some governing entity, and often involves the blessing of an almighty deity. “Rape, pillage, plunder, in the name of our god.”
I get your point, completely, I’m just at saturation point and need to bury my head in the sand, ostrich style. It’s warm down here, and I can see worms.
So I googled this Columbus/global warming thing. Interesting, fascinating, complex, and the outcomes are not what necessarily what we have come to expect either. Nothing trivial though. Not at all.
SNARK ALERT
The vehicles used by the expedition were in fact zero emission machines powered solely by renewable energy.

Just remember: all news is satire.
🙂
Nothing is true, everything is permissible.

This is only my opinion and I respect yours. 🙂
