SO I was responding to @rainwatch’s post but they wouldn’t post my comment- idk why- it wouldn’t even go to moderation!! So WTF. Since it won’t post, I am posting it here:

“”Mentally Ill” is a term the medical industrial complex gives ppl so they can legally put us on drugs for life and profit off of us. Just bc someone is depressed, it does not make them “mentally ill.” I mean, if you’re hallucinating and seeing people/objects/physical things that aren’t there, then yes that is mentally ill.
But having depression or suicidal thoughts is not “mentally ill.”
-If someone is depressed bc they’re lonely, is it a mental illness? Or just loneliness?
-If someone has health issues and is depressed af about constantly being sick and unable to do stuff, am I “mentally ill” or just a natural response to constantly being sick?
-If someone has a sh*t boss or coworkers and is depressed, is that person “mentally ill”?
-If someone is poor, makes crap pay at work, can’t afford most things, lives in a crappy place, and s/he is depressed, is that person “mentally ill”? Or is that just poverty? Are ppl living in poverty supposed to be happy then if it’s “wrong” or “mentally ill” to be depressed about life?
-If a girl gets r*ped/SA and is depressed and now don’t want to be near men, is she “mentally ill” or just responding to trauma?
Suicidal depression is NOT a form of mental illness. Yes, that’s what Big Phar.ma labels it, but can you trust an multi BILLION dollar industry to not lie to us just so they can make billions more?
If a boy gets r*ped at 12 and feels shame/suicidal/depressed since then, is he “mentally ill”? No, that’s a normal response to extreme sh*t happening to us.
Depression is a NORMAL response to all these things- yet we’re told WE are “mentally ill” and defective and need medication for LIFE- which juuuust coincidentally, makes them tons and tons of $$$.
Idk your particular case. Maybe you have other issues. Maybe you have hallucinations. Idk. Just saying for the majority of us here on SP, most of us have depression that stems from a sh*tty life and depression is just a NORMAL response. If we all magically had what we needed- love, support, friendship, health, better living situation, enough money, etc- most of us wouldn’t be suicidal or depressed.
Maybe you’re one of those ppl who can have “everything” and still feel suicidal. Then maybe you are “mentally ill.” But by far, most ppl who are depressed/suicidal are missing key facets in their life and if we got what we needed, we would not be suicidal/depressed. Or at least much less so. And that is absolutely normal.
You’d be surprised at how much having a loving SO, loving family, great friends, good job, good apt/house, good health, good coworkers/boss, makes. If someone doesn’t have any or all that, ofc they’re going to be depressed. Does that make us mentally ill? No. If we don’t have friends, OFC we’re going to be depressed. That is normal.
Yes, there are ofc some ppl who are mentally ill- people who have psychosis or whatever other issues.
But most ppl who have depression are just having a normal response to a crap life or some kind of trauma.

I disagree. I once thought EXACTLY like you that mental illness meant auditory and or visual hallucinations but hardcore depression when you consider ending your life is a mental illness. I don’t like the label mental illness but it can never be considered normal for someone to consider ending it no matter what led to it, your reasons at least what I can glean from your posts seems to stem from negative circumstances in your life but the end result is still the same namely suicidal depression. I agree with you about those depression drugs being a financial racket. We shall agree to disagree!
most ppl don’t actually want to die- most ppl just want their pain and suffering to end. but hey, if you wanna label yourself mentally ill, then so be it. we can call ourselves whatever we want. or not.
it’s “not normal” for ppl to want to die?
it’s also “not normal” for a 12yo to get r*ped.
it’s also “not normal” for a 7yo to get beaten daily.
yet it happens.
depression is a perfectly normal reaction to abuse.
depression is a perfectly normal reaction to a lot of shit in life.
some of us had a life of hard knocks.
buy hey, i’m not here to argue. you can label yourself whatever you want. i will never believe depression is abnormal when something horrific or traumatic happens to someone. or that depression is abnormal when ppl are lacking love, security, health, food, a safe place to live etc.
your reasons…seems to stem from “negative circumstances” in your life.
lol, that’s putting it mildly -_-
As a self confessed ‘depressive’ can you say in your heart of hearts that you’re thinking clearly. I know Im not, severe depression by its very nature clouds one’s thinking irrespective of what activated the depression in the first place. Anyway you make some valid points.
I agree for the most part. I’d add that many cases are driven by certain chemical imbalances. However I believe a majority of the chemical imbalance is induced by the pseudo society we are trapped in. In developmental years, being shoved with bad parenting/fear/stress/toxic food and sugars/medicine/the prospect we face of being a slave/and other traumas induce inherent maladaptations.
The medical industry is a villain for sure, it uses the few genuine cases where people need medical help and washes everyone with it.
We are depressed because a life worthy of living is dangled just out of reach and we are given ever unhelpful solutions that barely pass for symptomatic. “Depressed and poor? here are ways to reduce stress, stay hydrated.” Instead of just getting rid of money or, failing that, at least paying people a living wage, as an example
School/peer pressure/societal demands/religion/pressure to be ‘something’ …All tools used to disarm us from developing the psycological fortitude needed to help bring ourselves into balance, or even just understand who we are.
We are left in existential crisis for a single life forced to be wased on the utterly forgettable hot air called the economy. Nihilism, depression, self hate, suicide. It’s the response of a sentient being rejecting this construct built to destroy what it means to be human.
Yes there are genuine cases in need of medical assistance but I believe 80% of them would not be if we weren’t bred in a competitive, toxic system that is literally driven by unfairness, injustice and a need to destroy the only habitable world we know.
Depression and the very real horrors it portends is the consequence of system designed to eat humans for fuel to burn the planet.
Agreed Eternal…the times I’ve been depressed, maybe I’m in a very long-term low-key depression now and not realize it…are due to having a bad life.
The times when life was going good for me, I was happy and looked forward to what the next day would bring, esp. when I was a kid and didn’t have to worry about major issues in life.
I’m quite certain if I was able to fix the major issues in my today…(getting financial freedom for example), then I’d stopped feeling down about life, cause I’d be able to pursue my interests like traveling, getting back in shape and dating.
I think for some people who have everything in life, they might be ‘clinically depressed’…or have some kind of brain imbalance and in a sense are ‘mentally ill.’
Like people who are overly anxious all the time or have irrational phobias.
I mean I don’t care to put labels on things or people…but for most individuals, they’re depressed or sad/unhappy because of issues in their lives…imo and for a tiny few when it’s unexplainable, it’s probably the brain’s wiring causing it.
I once took 70 mg of some stimulant and I saw a little thing that looked like one of my drawings crawling on the walkl. It was actually quite fun. Psychosis isn’t even that bad for certain persons, according to others I’ve spoken to that have it. It’s just mild perceptual disturbances…
