~Arthur Schopenhauer on Suicide ~
Studies In Pessimism Full Article
“In my chief work I have explained the only valid reason existing against suicide on the score of mortality. It is this: that suicide thwarts the attainment of the highest moral aim by the fact that, for a real release from this world of misery, it substitutes one that is merely apparent. But from a mistake to a crime is a far cry; and it is as a crime that the clergy of Christendom wish us to regard suicide.
The inmost kernel of Christianity is the truth that suffering — the Cross — is the real end and object of life.
Hence Christianity condemns suicide as thwarting this end; whilst the ancient world, taking a lower point of view, held it in approval, nay, in honor.
But if that is to be accounted a valid reason against suicide, it involves the recognition of asceticism; that is to say, it is valid only from a much higher ethical standpoint than has ever been adopted by moral philosophers in Europe. If we abandon that high standpoint, there is no tenable reason left, on the score of morality, for condemning suicide. The extraordinary energy and zeal with which the clergy of monotheistic religions attack suicide is not supported either by any passages in the Bible or by any considerations of weight; so that it looks as though they must have some secret reason for their contention. May it not be this — that the voluntary surrender of life is a bad compliment for him who said that all things were very good ? If this is so, it offers another instance of the crass optimism of these religions,— denouncing suicide to escape being denounced by it.”
It will generally be found that, as soon as the terrors of life reach the point at which they outweigh the terrors of death, a man will put an end to his life. But the terrors of death offer considerable resistance; they stand like a sentinel at the gate leading out of this world. Perhaps there is no man alive who would not have already put an end to his life, if this end had been of a purely negative character, a sudden stoppage of existence. There is something positive about it; it is the destruction of the body; and a man shrinks from that, because his body is the manifestation of the will to live.
However, the struggle with that sentinel is, as a rule, not so hard as it may seem from a long way off, mainly in consequence of the antagonism between the ills of the body and the ills of the mind. If we are in great bodily pain, or the pain lasts a long time,we become indifferent to other troubles; all we think about is to get well.
In the same way great mental suffering makes us insensible to bodily pain; we despise it; nay,This is especially evident in the case of those who are driven to suicide by some purely morbid and exaggerated ill-humor.No special effort to overcome their feelings is necessary, nor do such people require to be worked up in order to take the step; but as soon as the keeper into whose charge they are given leaves them for a couple of minutes, they quickly bring their life to an end.
Suicide may also be regarded as an experiment — a question which man puts to Nature, trying to force her to an answer.
When,in some dreadful and ghastly dream, we reach the moment of greatest horror, it awakes us; thereby banishing all the hideous shapes that were born of the night.
And life is a dream: when the moment of greatest horror compels us to break it off, the same thing happens.
The question is this:What change will death produce in a man’s existence and in his insight into the nature of things? It is a clumsy experiment to make; for it involves the destruction of the very consciousness which puts the question and awaits the answer.”

What are you trying to say? I’m too lazy to interpret.
Honestly i always thought i was quite clever for a 15 year old, but looking at this article i dont really think i deserve an A in English.
I think( and im guessing here) Its about the pros and cons but in a religious point of view.
Then theres the question at the end asking will suicide make a difference or is it just a way to condemn ourselves?
Thank You anyway it is something to think about, but please try simpler English for all the teenagers out there. It must have taken time to write, but its hard to comprehend.
IMO there’s no devil, voila christianity is for the most part bullshit. Everything about being a good person is part of life. Life is choice. But as for specifically one deity creating humans is bullshit. Unless there’s a pool of gods and they create different existences, ok great for them, nothing condemning them then. But as for the beliefs and EGOS of humans. Fuck off.
What I mean
Being a good person = being a good person
suicide = a choice there’s no consequences, whatever happens after death will happen to you. Who you have been doesn’t matter. It’s only, What you are.
Fuck everything else (:
The only thing I believe in is discovering a higher existence.
Chill taulidpiaf its a persons views. Like you said life is a choice, if some people chose life and still want to follow religion its their choice. You cant really stop them from giving their views.
I understand yours but tone it down a little.
Also a thing to think about do you have any proof that God doesn’t exist. No one knows what happens after life either- they don’t exactly come back to tell us, but what if there is more. No one knows.
(: but the thing is. Why believe in a god? Why not just live life? No thinking.. simplicity… Because you know someone out of nowhere said “hey … let’s believe in philosophical bullshits. Excuse my language if that’s what you mean by tone it down :3 but think about it.. How we came about believing in a god.. Now days people are afraid to veer from those beliefs. They’re strung into them.. I used to be Christian.. raised Christian and I was afraid to think differently though I’ve always had my own views. Until I realized it was only hindering me, did I start calling it bullshit. I mean if you want a perfect world. Just live life without beliefs.. You live upon facts and YAY everything makes sense. No disputes. See what I’m saying :
I see what you’re saying but belief isn’t the important part of the religion. Its the teaching of the religion. To be nice, help and respect others, care for the sick etc. Thats what counts most. As for God there has to be a creator- yes it may be a waste of time thinking ultimate questions- but people need answers and not everything has facts. Science, people think of as fact but its changing ever so often, that facts aren’t even true themselves. Facts are beliefs that have a better chance of being true.
And you can’t live life without thinking- why because again we’re humans. And we have always wanted more then we could get, thats why we’re so “advanced”. Thats why we’re living in the modern world if by simple you mean sticks and stones. Life isn’t like that again though. You need to fight to live- atleast in the place where i live. Its ironic because you have to fight to live and fight to die.
Yes and toning it down did mean language. For one kids come on this site and two we’re in a bad enough state as it is we don’t need to make people feel worse about themselves.
And can i ask how did religion hinder you? As i have never faced that problem before and im quite religious, not very but quite.
I suppose the one thing i can give you credit for are the pictures. They are quite freaky, just looking at them.
I have no issue with religion or philosophy as long as people do not try to apply theirs to hinder or impede my path. When that happens then depending on the situation a direct or subtle opposition may be needed for me to continue on my path.
I have my own thoughts about things and although I may express them I do realize that they only apply to me and nobody else except those who choose to adopt a similar perspective.
IMHO, death is a practical end for me because I am tired of the ups and downs in life and I prefer not to succumb to the ravages of old age.
Kids wanting to die is sad because they have had no time to live for themselves and so their only experience is what has been done to them or what they have been influenced to do by others. Yes they are smart enough to think for themselves but their reasoning and emotional growth is stunted by malevolent actions by those in their environment.
People get lost in thought a lot, and many think philosophically about the point of ones existence. It described suicide as an ‘experiment’. I’ve oddly enough, felt suicidal thinking about life because if you look at it scientifically our existence is so pointless it almost seems futile living since you’ll get nothing out of it, and the only way to find a point in living is if something happens when you die. I guess that maybe why some people end their lives in a ‘experimental way’.
I myself have more human reasons for wanting to end my life, but I guess this is what a chunk of this text is discussing, but I am not THAT smart so I could be wrong.
