At one point I’ll put up a pic of myself so you all can see me. But basically I’m a half n half puertorican African American suicidally depressed self injuring 6″ tall 150 lb Afro-headed atheistic16 y.o. guy. There isn’t a thing about me people accept. Black people get stereotyped in my community, and the only Hispanics any of my neighbors know are the ones who cut their lawns. Next there’s the depression. People treat it like it’s a contagious disease. Like I’m some sort of freak for being suicidal or depressed. Then there’s the SI. Cutting n burning already are mass-comedicized. I get labeled as emo, ******, cutter, etc. Then add being a guy to that, and it makes it twice as bad. Scientifically girls r more prone to SI, n guys that do it r instantly mocked. Being 6″ tall n 150lbs, I’m completely disproportionate. I’m skinny n weak. I have dreadlock/braidlock/Afro hair, which people always make fun of for various reasons. Next us atheism. Most misunderstood/ hated people next to Muslims in America. I get notes saying “you should fucking kill yourself and see if god is real” or if I say god isn’t real or isn’t great I get “I’m gonna come to your house and kill you n your family you scumbag heathen.” next is being 16 years old. One of the most stereotyped ages ever. Not even gonna go there. So feel free to comment on this or add how you are discriminated against.

I feel you…but you seem like a cool, unique individual. 🙂
I’m a christian and I cannot believe the horrible things people who claim to believe in God say to other people sometimes. it’s disgusting, and I’m so sorry that anyone would say such a hateful thing to you. my best friend is agnostic, and we differ in opinions in a lot of ways, but the one thing we always agree on is the love we have for each other. I believe in Jesus,as I’ve said-but it makes me sooo angry when people who claim to be christians are out treating people so terribly-becasue they make all of christianity a mockery, they aren’t really christians. Jesus would never ever say something so hideous to you. I believe that God is love, and anyone who is a true christian will act out of love, not out of hate. I’m sorry I’m going on and on about this,it just really upsets me. 🙁 as for the rest of your post. i’m sorry your feeling so badly,I get what you mean about people treating depression like it’s some horrible thing-like it’s our fault or something. our definitely not alone in coping with that.:( i think everyone who has ever experience depression can understand. one of my other friends who struggles with cutting will wear long sleeves in 90 degree weather so no one will see. it’s not right.:( and i’m sorry about people being so racist. some people are terrible-but I would just tell you to consider the source. they are people blinded by hate, and they aren’t worth a second of your time spent being upset about what they think. I have a friend who is half japanese and half african american. I think she’s one of the most beautiful people I know. don’t let other people bring you down. I’m sure your very handsome and unique, that’s way better than looking just like everyone else anyway.looking like everyone else is boring. and about being 16-I remember. 🙁 i’m 19 now. just hang in there! it won’t last forever.
also-I’m about as white as they come. I’ve been called a cracker my whole life. theres been a lot of times I wished I could be tan like my cousin who is olive toned, because her skin is so beautiful. I think it’s about self acceptance and realizing we’re all beautiful. and also that everybody can feel self conscious,no matter what our background. hang in there.
interestingly, I was raised in a christian church … a believer … blah blah … it was the ‘serious christians” themselves that made me believe there could not be a god … how does such a vast number of self-professed devout people counteract everything Christ taught and died for, in His name? … But don’t “flaunt” your Atheist beliefs … the “believers” can’t cope because they just can’t comprehend a world with no god.
gwad dawg
I know what you mean dawg. but I don’t think those people are really christians. i think you can tell a lot more by a person’s actions then by what they say. i would never push my beliefs on someone else and i respect everyone’s opinions. but coming from a christian perspective,I think we’ll all be very surprised who’s in heaven and who isn’t.
Dawg – As a Christian, I can understand where you’re coming from. I just wanted to make the brief point that I have no problem with anybody who has different religious beliefs… or no religious beliefs. If someone is respectful, I have zero issues with them. None. I don’t judge a book by it’s cover. That’s short-sighted. As for your experience at church, I’ll be honest… I’ve been to some very open, warm, and inviting churches… and some others that have a more conservative air to them. I’m not saying one is wrong or right… but sometimes it’s best to check out a variety of churches to make an opinion. If somebody does “flaunt” their Atheist beliefs and anyone gives them a problem, it’s not the Athiest’s problem.. it’s the complainers. Life is too short. Sometimes we need to agree to disagree and move on.
@Ella – Agreed. If there is a heaven … I’ve read and studied the bible and other tenants and even though I no longer buy the dogma, I still believe in their moral teachings and am guided by them (for the most part).
@d.r – actually it has nothing to do with the church I used to be a member of … although I no longer live in that community – it had more to do with the more “regimented”, and dare I say, stricter interpretations that really turned me away – like roman catholic. that said, I also hole a belief that “god”. “angels”, etc. where alien being interacting with prehistoric, primitive-minded humans – it fits the evidence better
space dawg
FYI – I have reverent respect for believers … but total disdain and contempt for hypocritical boorish believers who are really who my earlier comments refer
clarification dawg
I understand, Dawg… I think respect is earned in life… I can deal with almost any belief or disbelief in life… In addition, I’ve had some good discussions with others holding a variety of viewpoints… and that’s something I enjoy doing.
I feel the same way Dawg. it makes me so mad that people take Jesus out of christianity. I think mankind can ruin just about anything. I think that are a true christian, you strive to live like jesus lived. I have some strict roman catholic relatives and it frustrates me because i don’t understand where a lot of their opinions come from and it’s my personal belief that alot of their beliefs are manmade laws. but i don’t want to speak against the catholic church either, that’s just my opinion and I agree that everyone has a right to their own. I think it’s really cool when people can express their opinions in a discussion like this where everyone is respectful and open minded. you guys get major cool points.:)
*correct, some people take Jesus out of christianity
*correction. wow,i might throw my keyboard out the window. 😛
@d.r – while I agree that respect is earned, I believe that everyone deserves a basic amount of “free” respect at first … like going to a casino in the Vegas and they give you a complimentary $50 chip to start when you walk in … it’s theirs to either build up or throw away. I think it’s unfair to start a total stranger who has done nothing good or bad at a level of zero trust and respect
@Ella – unfortunately the bible itself is a production of man. a book cobbled together by men some 400 years after Christ died … books were cherry-picked to add or exclude only those that fostered the thoughts and beliefs of powerful men … they used and excluded popular scriptures of the times and only the most “favorable” translations … not necessarily the most accurate. That said, I certainly don’t believe it’s my place to change the minds of believers … I have a friend who I debate religion with – he’s catholic – and every time I see him really looking “worried” that his “faith” doesn’t have a counter argument to one of my points – I actually offer a solution so as to leave his faith intact … I don’t want to destroy his faith, it make him who he is … but I believe they shouldn’t blindly believe everything they’ve been told either because some of it is man-made corruption and de-jesus-ification of their church structure fro within by people who have been corrupted by power and greed
judicious dawg
@Dawg – I agree… and I probably should have stated that. I go into a situation assuming the best… and providing respect. Like the casino credit, it is theirs to lose.
I figured you knew/meant that … just wanted to clarify and spell it out to those who might not.
“tis better to give than receive” … I heard that somewhere 😉
dawg
i agree so much with you dawg, about not believing in something without reasons to back up what you believe. i don’t ever want to be one of those people who believes something because they’ve been spoon fed it,I want to know all there is to know about everything(i love studying religion and science both) and make my own choices. I believe i have in my life, and because I am a christian I’m not afraid to come to God with my doubts and questions. I think the bible invites you to challenge it,and if It’s God’s word,it’ll will withstand anything, and i’ve yet to find an argument that can’t be countered concerning the validity of the bible. I’m very open minded, but I always look into it.my best friend is agnostic,i love debating with her. she is a genius and has thrown every angle possible at me,and so far,she hasn’t been able to change my mind, not after 7 years. I could go on forever about why I believe in the validity of the bible. but I don’t want to babble.:) i just want to thank you and distant for talking in such a respectful way about it. I respect both of you immensely. i guess we just agree to disagree? 🙂
