Studies show that negative thoughts can create an imbalance in the chemistry of the mind
And Studies show that a chemical imbalance of the mind can create negative thoughts, or illusionary thoughts, that create negative experience.
My feelings are that a person suffering from depression can be helped with taking medicine to restore chemical balance, which then puts them in a better place to deal with their thoughts. Once in a more balance state the issues should be addressed, even if only the issue of having to take medication, in order to become balanced mind, body and soul.
Think of it as creating neuron connections or pathways and roads.
Studies show that the brain is capable of recreating connections throughout its life.
Negative thoughts then can create pathways that trigger the creation or suppression of certain chemicals. (Perhaps the path bypasses the ice cream store and we really have a want ice cream)
Medication can rebalance the chemicals in the brain, but not necessarily the pathways so unless we change the connections and crate new paths we will be dependent on the medication.
The degree of which we are capable of changing our connections is different for each of us.
For the majority of us who depression is articulated, and so likely stemming from existential angst, a loss of purpose and meaning there is allot that we can do to help our selves.
Measuring whether the root of our depression is due to this or that and so fortunate or unfortunate is not helpful.
And I don’t think it’s really required, most of our measurements are not required and I would add make it difficult to enjoy life. Can you imagine a life where you didn’t have to constantly measure everything in order to determine if you were happy or not!
When we are depressed we don’t measure very accurately anyway so when you catch yourself measuring try stopping. Be a rebel and refuse!
I think it is enough to acknowledge that if you are depressed that is what you are feeling. Measuring it and labelling it as a bad will only end up with you feeling bad about feeling bad.
Getting depressed because you’re depressed… how can you get out of a hole if you keep digging it deeper?
Everyone’s depression is seemingly different, even though it is the same chemicals interacting in every person’s brain. While depression is caused by chemicals in the brain (whether an inbalance or abundance or certain ones), the reasons why we are depressed and things causing us great sadness could be as different as night and day.
Before you can resolve the depression issue, must find the underlying causes. I have been depressed on and off for over 15 years and I am still struggling to find the most detrimental underlying causes.

Do the thoughts create the imbalance or the imbalance the thoughts?
I personally believe it’s both.
Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I haven’t found the answer to that yet.
It’s really a chicken and egg question.
