A combination of the two is best.
My sister got a 4,0 GPA through undergrad and her Masters program. She’s very smart. I never got a degree and earned 5X as much as her. (I’m shallow & materialistic). Depends on what you want out of life.
Book smart people don’t seem to care as much about money. They like being brainy. Street smart people are pragmatic. This is a tough question.
Is it better to be ruled by your right brain or your left?
If you’re only book smart you’re going to be naive about the real world. What good is your BA in Ancient Roman History when you want to invest in the stock market, or buy an affordable, efficient new vehicle? Nonetheless, I don’t think there should be any limit on knowledge – everyone should be equipped with the necessary survival skills for a fast-paced, ever-changing world, but it would be nice if they weren’t completely brain-dead twats either. My personal philosophy: learn as much as possible, be aware of scientific endeavours and technological innovation, immerse yourself in culture, literature, the arts, philosophy, and keep a keen eye open in the business world.
I would choose to possess the knowledge the pilgrims had about how to make gunpowder using nothing but piss and vinegar, and how to clean a kill. Then I’d go live in a cave somewhere and say, “Fuck you, civilization.”
But I dunno which option that would fall under. :-/
