Keep yourself distracted, give yourself something else to worry about. Seems to work half the time. Whatever you do, try not to come to a complete halt, thus leaving your mind some time to wonder.
Hi, ThisIsNoDemocracy. Your question is my question, too. For years the most frequent advice I got was RogeLonesome’s–keep so busy you can’t stop to think about what’s hurting you. Maybe the advice keeps coming around because it works for enough people that they keep advocating it. When I try it, though, I run myself into the ground and ultimately get sick. I’d have to keep “going” until I literally fell from exhaustion, otherwise the moments before sleep overtakes me my mind recalls hurtful events, circumstances so that I cannot sleep or rest.
I feel guilty for admitting this, but I use a legal (everywhere in the US) substance to distract myself. But the consequences have been dire and themselves contribute to my depression. If you find another potentially effective way to distance yourself from hurtful thoughts, would you please post? I’ll be hoping you feel markedly better soon.
I don’t think there is any one key to keeping positive; I think it’s something that you have to find for yourself. I enjoy working in customer service and even on my worst days, a coffee or energy drink and trying to have a laugh with some customers usually helps me out.
But that’s the thing, this won’t work for everyone.
Try doing something creative; try writing, try drawing, download some music software and try to make a song. Some people find that feeling depressed can unleash some intense creativity. That doesn’t work very well for me, but it might work for you!
