“Maybe if you go to bed you’ll feel better in the morning” is literally just the human version of “Have you tried turning it off and back on again?”
just came across this. wanted to know your thoughts on it because a lot of people get this kind of response.

It’s usually a stall tactic. Yes… If somebody is physically sick, sleep is often an asset to getting better. But sleep is often used as a put-off to get people to avoid the problem, stop bugging whoever they’re speaking with, and get them out the door. I’m all for a good night’s sleep… but delaying one’s problems and letting them grow so they’re worse isn’t good advice.
Hehee, it does sound like a reboot. Maybe because it actually is – sleeping is just like a reboot of the brain. It’s when the brain handles reorganization, tissue repair and moving things around to permanent storage.
I’ve been running in Safe Mode for awhile, due to a short circuit and rewriting of my software. I’m an open source type deal, with the flexibility to be modified and improved upon. Falling to sleep for me is like hard resetting a smartphone or even just pulling the plug from the wall.
Yet I still keep putting the power cord back in.
I like it. Great analogy
with computers and related devices, sometimes this can actually work. It doesn’t change what caused the problem, but a reboot can produce a fresh system state, in which the inexplicably produced anomaly has not occurred, and there is no guarantee that it will or won’t occur again.
Sometimes you can’t fix what produces the anomaly, but you also don’t want that anomaly present in normal operation conditions, so the first thing you should try is a reset. Maybe the problem won’t happen again, or, quite likely, “user error,” or perhaps choice of added programs, is the source of the anomaly. Chances are, if you continue the same patterns and activities as before the reset, you will encounter the problem again, repeatedly, requiring frequent reboots, in order to obtain a non-compromised computing environment.
But sometimes, something edits your registry, or you get a root kit, or any number of other serious problems that don’t get fixed by a reboot. And if you don’t have a good backup, and don’t have both the install media and the time/resources to rebuild your entire system from scratch… you’re stuck with whatever mysterious problem happened, until you can start over, because no one knows what you did to your own system, and no one knows what someone else did to your system, and so no one can fix it.
Troubleshooting can be prohibitively complicated.
Basically, once you figure out you can’t fix it, you need to back up everything you can save, and start the reinstall process.
But then!
You have to be very careful upon adding “third-party” stuff to your OS, because it’s likely that one of those things you started using, somewhere along the way, is what caused the problem you can’t figure out how to solve. And if you install and use that same thing, in the same ways as last time, it’s going to corrupt your system again, unless they patched it not to do so.
All this becomes extremely tedious and exhausting, to the point where you’re tired of dealing with it, and may give up computing entirely, because the things you want to compute, keep corrupting your system, and “ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat!”
If they provided evidence to support it by citing a recent article in The Journal for Neuroscience that claimed lost sleep resulted in the loss of brain cells, I’d be more inclined to have an early night.
Clevername just described living in this world. His final paragraph explains why we’re on SP
I respect clevername
Clevername after reading some replies I have to say your writing skills are amazing. Everything appears so well thought out and makes great sense. I would love someone with yours skills in my arena. I sincerely wish the best for you in your future endeavors. I do understand that were all on sap for a reason, but this isn’t meant to be one of those “oh things will get better” generic posts. If you can channel your speculative writing style you have a good shot.
Thanks, Reviarg, i appreciate that.
Not sure what to say, but just deleted several superfluous paragraphs i wasn’t comfortable with (*with which i wasn’t comfortable, lol).
I’ve had some ideas, but something always stops me.
I’m curious about your “arena.”
Clevername, I can’t say too much because my job is all that keeps me going. But I supervise a group in charge of permitting industrial sources. We mostly hire engineers but I need people with the critical thinking your writing exemplifies. Is there any way I can pm you? I can’t guarantee anything but as somebody in charge of hiring I can give youadvice. Regardless of background, one you can get a foot in the door your performance can spring opportunities.
***rant time*** this post is making me cry. I love my job and I know so much that can benefit others but I can’t continue with my physical health. I’ve met ppl who can’t deal with their emotional pain and I admit I can’t relate, but I’m tired of dealing with my declining physical health where nobody has any solution. They tell me to manage it, I’m an engineer, fuck managing I solve problems. Sorry for the rant.
Go for it, clevername…. You never know. Give an anonymous e-mail address, see what happens, and go from there. Your writing style is pretty darn good.
Email aI guess this can be a test. Go ahead and make a new address. When I am the one to email you back you will be able to link my sp info to my email address.
Damn tablet. Changed the whole structure of my post. Make a new email address..
i had to go to some things, but i was going to say: if i’ve commented in your posts, you could see my email (which is a legit functioning email i’ve dedicated to SP use), but then i went and found your singular post and saw i hadn’t commented, so you wouldn’t be able to see my address… and then(!) i began composing a comment, to facilitate this, but then i stepped away for a bit.
Also, if you’ve commented on any of my posts (which i haven’t checked yet), i could get your email from there (assuming the one you used for your account actually works).
ugh, *do… sans-glasses typo-monster strikes again!
