The devil as a guy with horns and a tail is an image taken from a pagan hunting god. Lucifer, the name we attribute to the devil in the context of Christianity as the fallen angel, means the morning star, the bringer of light – light in this context meaning knowledge and enlightenment, the light of wisdom shining through the darkness of stupidity. He was God’s favourite, certainly, but the reason he was kicked out of heaven was for questioning God. This in itself shows Christianity’s view on asking pertinent questions of religious authority, namely that it is a dangerous practice that needs to be punished. Given this, it is easy to infer that, yes, the devil is within every one of us – when we seek knowledge, when we ask questions, in our quest for enlightenment over the blind acceptance of dogma. The devil is beautiful, and he is in all of us, albeit in differing amounts.
