I don’t know of any that really knock you out. Zzquil makes you drowsy, but it doesn’t make you fall sleep, it just makes you feel really out of it imo, but it might be worth a shot if you don’t know of anything else since everyone reacts differently to different medications. For me, my seroquil knocks me out, but I also literally cannot sleep without it anymore.
There’s nothing, and trust me you do not want to go down that road. Once you start messing with your brain chemistry to get to sleep you’ll never be the same. You’ll lose the ability to fall asleep consistently on your own. I took prescription sleeping pills for years and I still have a lot of sleep problems. Melatonin is something sold over the counter but that too will leave you with a dependence, or at least what you think is a dependence where you get nervous you won’t be able to sleep unless you pop some.
My solution these days is to read or play angry birds but my sleep still sucks.
Unisom (diphenhydramine HCL), also the same as Benedryl allergy medicine which is usually cheaper, works for me.
If you’ve never taken them before, try taking just 2 (50 mg each), and that ought to flatten you for a good 8 hours. Do NOT take more than 4 because it’ll probably have the opposite effect… your heart will start beating out of your chest and depending on how much anxiety you’ve already got, it’ll make you want to claw your skin off.
If you make it a habit, you’ll build up a tolerance pretty fast which sucks. Like BlueSteel says, messing with your brain chemistry will only make things worse in the long run. At one point in my life I was taking 14 pills every morning to deal with the stress of work… Who knows if it did anything, at that point I was so screwed in the head I couldn’t tell the difference.
But if you just need to knock yourself out once in a blue moon, they’re good to keep handy. Sometimes it’s better to knock yourself out than stay up… especially if you have a lot of sharp objects in the house.
Even if you pop an entire bottle of ambiens you won’t die. You’ll just be asleep a long time and eventually wake up gagging on your own vomit and feel horrible for days.
I’m fairly confident that the poster isn’t asking because he/she wants to OD. Think more, narcoleptic falling asleep in a really bad place to fall asleep.
