Imagine if we lived in a society where EVERYONE was sad/depressed/suicidal?
Wonder what that would be like. Would be interesting… Heck, I might like it since I no longer have to see annoying happy people strolling along with their happy lives all the time.
If everyone is depressed, then there’s also no more need to pretend and put on a face for people. No more faking it and no more seeing people fake shit either. And no more annoying Christmas music. Ever.

then most of us probably wouldnt be sad/depressed/suicidal 😛
This is really interesting when I stop to think about it.
If depression became the norm, then eventually it might get to the point where joy was considered “abnormal”, and doctors might prescribe new medications to “fix” people who were too happy. (Imagine the commercials for that! 🙂 )
It would make a great fantasy/sci-fi story.
I definitely liked the part about not having to “fake it” anymore. And not having to hide the pain when happy giddy couples walk by. And I also laughed about the Christmas music, because OMG, yes, I feel exactly that way too. 😉
They already do. Look at how they treat bipolar people- too happy and you need meds. Depressed- too sad and you need meds. Too much feeling- you need meds. You don’t feel enough? You need meds too. Too active- you have ADHD and you need meds. It’s ridic.
I hadn’t thought of that, but yes.
I guess I thought manic people were seen as having “too much energy” instead of “too much joy”. But really when one stops to think of it, there’s a gray area. Where do we draw the line?
It would make a GREAT story, or a great sci-fi novel.
The people in your group: Johnny Depp, Michaelangelo, Mozart , Beethoven, Isaac Newton, Edgar Allen Poe, etc, They did more than feel sorry for themselves. That’s why they’re remembered.
Of course. People who are depressed and do nothing get nowhere. Just like happy people who do nothing get nowhere. To be great and to be remembered takes talent, brains, determination and hard work. No one said it would be easy to be great.
Hm, if I actually had energy, I’d take you up on that and write a sci-fi story, titled “A Depressed World” 😛 But alas…
It’s an interesting thought experiment, but my gut instinct is that not much of a society would arise from a population of entirely depressed individuals.
Also, I wouldn’t wish depression or suicidal ideation on anyone, no matter how appealing the idea of a world without Christmas music is.
lol, maybe ship us off to another planet. We’d be the planet of depressed people.
There has been A LOT of depressed people who’ve changed society and done incredible things. Some of the most brilliant minds, mathematicians and scientists and philosophers, were depressed people.
John Adams, Julian Assange, Isaac Newton, Edgar Allen Poe, Mozart, Beethoven, Michaelangelo, Abraham Lincoln, Van Gogh, Buzz Aldrin, + tons more.
Johnny Depp, Marilyn Monroe, Brooke Shields, – heck, 99% of all actors/actresses are either bipolar or depressed. As are many writers. And models. And singers. Basically all of Hollywood.
So a planet of depressed people- we’d be fine 🙂
We’d be very intelligent and talented…and depressed.
Society has blackmarked depression. It’s a social stigma where we can’t tell people about it. If we do, we get judged and deemed as either defective or not as good as everyone else. If we all accepted depression as something natural, that LOTS of people AROUND THE WORLD have, then we wouldn’t have to hide who we are, hide our feelings, and have society make us feel worse. If depression was accepted, then we’d know how common it is, just how many people have it, all over the world, and instead of being “shamed” we’d just be accepted.
A planet full of depressed people would have the most amazing art and the most beautifully expressive heart-wrenching music.
I also think we wouldn’t go to war with each other, since our limited energy would already be spent fighting the wars within ourselves on a day-to-day basis.
A planet full of non-depressed people would be pretty boring if you think about it. Most of the great artists, musicians, and singers are all depressed. Their planet won’t have Adele, Amy Winehouse, Brittany Murphy, River Phoenix, plus lots of other amazing people.
Honestly, I think a planet without us depressives will be a very bland, boring world, with sub-par music, art, movies, and actors. Plus, they’d lag so far behind us in terms of technology and inventions.
Most of our greatest thinkers, scientists, mathematicians, philosophers, were the MOST depressed people. I mean, if you aren’t depressed, you aren’t going to sit still in your room all day and night and think about stuff.
Honestly, I think the world OWES us depressed and bipolar people. Without us, our planet would still be stuck in the stone-age. So instead of shaming us, they need to thank us.
It’s like how people back in the old days used to view left-handed people as bad, defective, weak, evil even. Now we don’t even think twice and accept that left-handed people are normal, just like the rest of us.
Social stigma is terrible. Shaming people for having natural human emotions should be banished.
Very true.
” Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul”
-Marilyn Monroe
Nah, if we lived in a society where everyone was sad we’d all be happy as fuck and still stick the hell out.
No comment Nope.. No Way….
