It’s a nice video, but “the only way out of it is to see a specialist”? Sorry, I don’t know how it is in the UK but here in the States, the therapists suck. I’ve seen a bunch of them and they don’t give a damn about you. If it works for some people, great. But I’ve met plenty of people who have been harmed by these people who are supposed to help us.
The girl in the video, as cute and pretty as she is, even says in the video description, that she’s never had depression.
Not trying to bash the video or you for uploading it, but I get peeved when people think all you gotta do is “go see a therapist” and all will be well.
You have a valid point… but my “so true” was aimed at the discrption of whats living with depression made in the video regardless of the actress and solutions suggested .
I don’t know how it is in UK/US, but I’m quite sure that video is from Poland and I suppose their system is more in line with what we have in my country, as we have basically the same culture, institutions and all. It’s separated in two parts, a psychiatrist, who doesn’t really “talk” with patients in here, but rather focuses on the medication and prescription part and visits can be as short as 15 minutes for a new patient and as low as 5 minutes for subsequent visit and then there is the classic psychologist (“therapist”), who does the talking part and it usually takes one hour per each visit. Honestly, I have yet to see a psychologist whose visit had longer lasting effect than just few days at best. It’s mostly all paid by insurance (which has everyone in here), so the money are not an issue.
Talking about my problems helps a lot, even this site is based on it – to give people a safe place to talk, but there is only so much a psychologist can (in my opinion) do by talking. So if “talking” doesn’t help someone, their only option left in my country is to go to the psychiatrist, which still has a lot of stigma around it in here and can be described as “throwing medication at you until something works” (which sometimes work, so it’s not entirely bad). Our mental care has a long way to go and I think we are far behind in this area when compared to, for example, UK or US. It got a lot better in recent years but we still aren’t quite there yet.
I believe the video is a good representation of how a person with depression feel. Sometimes there are people that like that young woman, that most probably should not be depressed, that have kind of support and get on that status. Depression cannot be fixed just with medication or a therapist, just changing the things that cause the depression, a person could really get better. But I believe a very important step on recovering, is to go to see a mental health professional.
