I got a new tablet recently (Samsung Galaxy Tab “S”), and I’m interested in finding an app that will let me try to draw things.
Can any of you recommend a good FREE app for this?
I see a number of options in the app store but don’t know what ones are trash. The ones I’ve tried so far have been disappointing.
All I want to do is sketch things and doodle, then save the picture so I can post it here if it’s not too horrible.
I tried one called “Sketch Guru” but it didn’t work so I uninstalled it.
There was another one called “Sketchbook” by Autodesk which seemed kind of questionable. They kept hinting that it wasn’t really going to be free, and wanted me to click on licensing agreements. I uninstalled that one quickly too.
If I can’t find a good free sketchpad app, I guess I could just doodle on sheets of actual paper, and take pictures of it, and post the pictures.
Meh.
I’m not a particularly good artist, so keep those expectations low. I remain amazed at the great artwork some of you post here. Incredible stuff. Sketches and paintings and other visual art. Hazy, Jiminy, Phantom, October_Rain, and everyone else who’s posted something.
I have no intention of becoming a serious professional artist; I just want to have fun dabbling in it. My favorite art form will always be music.
Anyway, any recommendations for sketchpad/sketchbook apps?

Cordless, good morning 🙂 Nope can’t help, but i wish you luck!
Good evening!
Don’t really know a good app for drawing but when i want an app i usually google “best app for…..”. It helped me a few times.
i use “Fresh Paint” Really basic and I can import and export the pictures.
paint pad hd looks promising.
Are you going to be using your finger or a stylus?
I’m looking at Drawing Desk now.
I’d just download them one by one and figure out which one you like the best.
Drawing desk. Definately drawing desk. Do you have that available to you?
Now I’m trying something called “design Creater”
looks promising. I can import pictures and export.
crap that one is really glitchy.
Artflow studio is really cool. There is a spyrigraph ap you can use with it. Yeah this one looks fun too. I guess it has to do with what you want. I don’t see anything that does what my painting ap does though. Which is unfortunate.
Let’s try this again: Samsung tablet example — > kawacy.deviantart.com/art/Samsung-All-Sketches-607389541 It actually looks very good, with excellent line variations and so forth and they were using Autodesk.
Ideally, you’d want professional grade stuff, the same stuff that the professionals use — but they are thousands of dollars (like $10K). –> wacom.com/en-hk/products/pen-displays/cintiq-27-qhd-touch “The Pro Pen offers ultra-fine precision through 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity, tilt recognition and a comfortable ergonomic design. A selection of interchangeable nibs provides a range of different feels and possibilities.”
Nice.
I think we have to know what she wants to paint. Does she want realistic stuff like I’m using or amazing inking capability like you are using. Some of these ap allow to import a photo and work from that others don’t. It seems the free aps are kind of limited though.
Ideally I’d like to start with simple doodles and gradually teach myself how to sketch things that are actually recognizable.
I don’t need paint, just a plain pen/pencil and a blank white screen for a sheet of paper.
Basic.
Okay well it looks like I’m just entertaining myself at this point. Let me know if you want any more products tested out. These were all tested out on my Kindle Fire HD. FTR Sketch Guru can’t make you buy anything unless you put your credit card in. It most likely offers a limited version of the package and then as you grow to like the product they hope you will buy the pro pack. Which works more than you would think.
Radical Concept: How about a piece of paper and some colored pencils? Or maybe a blank canvas and a paint-brush with different colors of paint?
I’m not anti-technology, I just like the old fashioned/traditional ways of doing it.
So do I morris, but with my lifestyle it is nearly impossible for me to get out my oils or charcoles. This is the only way I get to do anything at all.
Right on.
I like the word ‘dilettante’, it means ‘one who dabbles in the arts’. Not an expert, just a dabbler. (I’m a dilettante musician. ‘Wannabe’ has a negative connotation to it). 🙂 Rock on.
I feel like I should have a really big hat with a collosal feather off the side of it and hip boots…with a fucking huge sword on my hip…
Dilettantes Unite!
@Hazy; Do that, plus get a parrot on your shoulder and you’ll be a pirate.
I should totally draw that too. Morris you can be my second mate and swab my deck.
Um. that came out wrong.
Haha.
It’s all good, I like the raunchy double entenderes. (You’re off the hook, I won’t submit a job application at the HDS human resources department).
What if SP started an outlaw biker gang? Would there be a mandatory no-helmet law? Could moped/scooter riders join the gang? Would we talk about our feelings at official club meetings? Idk.
Scooter rides would be absolutely allowed in!
as for speaking about our feeeeeeeelings at the official club meetings I’d sooner put a rail road nail in my eye.
Unless there was booze, then sure I’ll talk about my feelings all night long.
The thought of riding helmetless….whooooo my neck hairs are standing up just thinking about it.
Yeah, I like doing it with no protection too.
Helmets. We’re talking about riding without a brain-bucket. (Please remove your head from the gutter). 🙂
LOL!
You two crack me up.
@Morris: Yeah, at this point I am thinking that an actual sheet of paper and a simple #2 pencil is going to be a lot easier than finding a virtual way of getting this.
I’m not a good sketcher/drawer at all, so I don’t need anything professional or expensive.
Just some silly little way to doodle when I want to.
I bought an 88-cent stack of plain white note-pads, and I carry a pencil with me everywhere. So your “radical concept” is my current plan of action, unless I find an app I like better.
Your old school “app” works great.
Try the other ones I posted. I don’t know if they are good for a galaxy tablet (they are nice btw, congrads). But there are a bunch of aps that are for drawing that are really quite good and all of them allow you to export.
Worse case scenario you do a screen shot.
It’s still new to me; I haven’t even had it for a week yet.
I have no idea how to do screen shots on a tablet.
Laptop, yes.
Tablet, no.
My old tablet was cheap and slow and frustrating, so I rarely used it.
My new one is amazing so I’m trying to use it as much as possible.
For some reason it never lets me post on SP, and about 50% of the time I’m not allowed to comment with it either. The browser just hangs and hangs until I get an error saying it didn’t work.
Is it the flash player?
My Kindle just stopped working on youtube. I almost stuck my head in the oven.
It can’t be Flash.
On the laptop, I made sure Flash was updated.
On the tablet, there is no Flash at all, yet 50% of the time it will still let me comment.
Whatever this glitch is, it does it no matter what browser I use, no matter what device I use.
Doesn’t sound like the problem is on my end.
Plus sometimes it DOES let me post from the laptop.
Just not always.
The admins never did answer when I asked.
It would’ve been nice if they’d answered, even if the answer was “Holy crap, we’re stumped.”
Perhaps you could apprentice as a tattoo artist. Infiltrate a shop and pose as a budding up & comer.
You’ll start off tattoing oranges and watermelons, but that’s ok, Pablo Picasso had humble origins too.
Or I can just approach random strangers and say “Do you mind if I draw on you with this permanent marker?”
It’s probably best to gain consent before poking random strangers. (Seems like a polite course of action).
Do I still need consent if I drug them first?
No.
Awesome!
Be sure to watch for me in the news:
“Depressed mediocre artist banned from local Taco Bell”.
That’s a grey area.
I’d let you have your way with me if you fed me first, but I’m an easy slut. People with higher standards could be more difficult to convince.
Some people don’t like being drugged and taken advantage of. Me? I like it, just feed me first. (Steak. Medium rare).
Duly noted.
What Morris is really into is collecting people he can later accuse of being stalkers. (See above scenario.)
Meh. I would be the worst stalker ever.
Yeah, as you know, the industry standard is Adobe Photoshop. Corel Painter is another very popular program. adobe.com/products/photoshop.html?promoid=KLXLS painterartist.com/us/product/paint-program/
I have adobe at work, it is mindboggling how much it contains.
Oh, yeah! Believe it.
(As a side-note: This is what I don’t like about communicating through written word alone — we don’t get everything: The fluctuation of the voice, the nuances of the vocals to suggest different takes and approaches, etc.)
I am going to have to start using it to layer ArcGIS maps. OMG my brain fried just looking at it.
@everyone: HI, sorry I disappeared there for awhile. The site was doing that thing where it doesn’t let me post, except this time it wasn’t letting me comment either. But now it seems to be working ok.
ANSWERS:
@Hazy: Either stylus or finger is fine, I own at least one of both. 😉
At this point I’m not interested in painting, just sketching.
I need something as simple as a blank sheet of paper and a pencil.
I need to be able to export whatever I end up making.
I don’t care at all about importing photos and fancifying them.
I don’t care at all about glitter and stickers and extra junk.
Just a pencil and paper.
For free.
Looking forward to some Cordless creations. I’ve been thinking about getting a kindle fire myself. I do most of my internetting on my phone these days, guess I’m just a little lazy, I have a laptop but I really don’t like how bulky it is, I’m too used to my phone I guess. My mom has a kindle fire and I love it. I’ve checked out prices on amazon and they aren’t bad… HDS didn’t you say you have a kindle tablet?
Yup. I auto correct bomb on a regular basis using it. I love it.
