as a depressed person of moderate intelligence, I can’t see trading it away for something as temporary as “happiness”, meanwhile actually taking on a substantial amount of liability.
Being stupid doesn’t make anything better. At best it makes you complacent with people who pretend to be smarter making decisions for you. So it doesn’t actually attack the central problem of depression; lack of control. Further, assuming we are talking about actual high intelligence (and not the silly farce society calls genius at times. see the Apple “genius bar” for an apt example), more intellect would make me more effective.
I’m chronically low energy, and intelligence is the best friend of anyone who is short of assets. A highly intelligent person is first and foremost lazy, else they wouldn’t spend so much energy decreasing time being “bored.”
to me it’s the same as a French peasant in pre revolutionary France wondering if they’d be better off illiterate….. it would make them a better peasant, it wouldn’t materially help THEM.

Happy idiot because I’m already a depressed idiot.

Happy idiot. Any day.
Depressed genius. I don’t like being dumb.
I can understand your sentiment, but as a happy idiot you’d be blissfully unaware. Oh, to be unaware…
Happy Idiot I would take that over almost any other offers
