A really popular freeware rpg maker horror game, Yume Nikki is a story about a socially reclusive girl who never leaves her home and instead sleeps to live in a lucid world of dreams and nightmares, from the serene to the disturbing…
The game has no plot or dialogue to speak of, but instead a big open world with a lot of creative interactivity with these effects that you collect.
Many people have tried to come up with their own explanations on this game’s imagery, whether or not any symbolism actually exists, and have even made their own fan games, which there are many.
I’m not sure what to say other than that, sorry. 🙁 I have a description of this game in my profile too. :p
Yume Nikki: In a silent world, a lone girl who refuses to leave her home does nothing but sleep and play games all day and night… In her dreams, there are a number of interesting things, from the disturbing to the serene. What does it all mean? That is up for you to decide.
(A total classic, this game has gotten an entire plethora of fan games made in it’s name. The open world nature and surrealism draw in people a lot, if not the introversion.)
How to Play
Download the game, an RTP file (Rpg Maker 2003 I think), and a file extractor such as Winrar, then when you download the game, right click and extract the files through your file extractor and it should have it’s own folder and an icon somewhere for you to play it when you open it up. :p
I can’t really explain this… if you still need help, you could probably google or youtube it. :p
Anyways, I hope you enjoy Yume Nikki and it’s fan games. <3

Actually, for a game production class, I led a team of people to make a game similar to Yume Nikki, except it was 3D first-person and the dreams were a bit more concrete. Unfortunately, the experience wasn’t as positive as I hoped, as it’s kinda difficult to get people behind this flowy, strange type of game, when game design is typically more straight-forward. Plus, apparently I’m shittier at communicating than I thought, and for some reason, people didn’t know the game had a possible suicide ending, which shocked some of them. I thought I told them early on, but I guess I didn’t. It was really stressful, and I felt like a bad leader the entire time.
Unfortunately, I can’t link to the game because I don’t want to reveal my identity. But, I guess it would surprise no one that I was incredibly stressed and depressed all while we were making this game. I hope I can play Yume Nikki again someday… or work more on my game someday… without this sinking feeling.
I’m sorry to hear that. 🙁
Was that a new one or some other one?
Also, I don’t think you should feel so bad, making a game and directing sounds hard. 😕 You did the best you could. 🙂
I suppose it’s a shame if it didn’t turn out so well but at least you good intentions onstead of supposedly doing things “for the money” and all that…
Thank you. It was a new game, we didn’t share it publicly.
And… on second thought, I mean… it wasn’t all bad. The final result does look pretty neat, there were some cool aspects of it, and everyone worked really hard on it.
But the final feel of the gameplay isn’t quite what I hoped. :/ When you ask a bunch of people to playtest something that doesn’t play like a normal game, they understandably complain that they’re lost, confused, and want direction, so we were kinda forced to be too on-the-nose and cut a ton of things for time. Which was opposite of the subtlety I was aiming for. I mean, I don’t want to be unfair to my team; I’m proud of their work, it’s impressive for a small team with little time, and they’re cool people. But… yeeah… directing a game is easier said than done. Lots of disagreements, stress, and crying. But maybe it’ll be easier if I try again in the future.
If I have a future, of course. lol
That’s sad that she has these nightmares why can’t she just be free?
The Nightmares itself are free. They’ll be invisible for the Dreamer. All she feels is around it. When she’s awake it’s all empty. To life is the Dream. Any Day. And to Dream, any night is liminal, to the Nightmares, the actual fun. I want mine soon again, the paralysis, the falling into the own head and to leaving of the body, this open eyes at sleep.
And I want to be all alone. Nothing shall believe to force my body for that.
There is a Steam Version of the Game too.
