How many times have I heard that a suicidal person is selfish if he/she kills him/her self? That makes me so angry, because I know the pain, the years of unending pain, that leads one to attempt suicide. When I hear things like “you’ve hurt so many people who care about you,” I want to scream “what about a pain that drives me to want to die.” Doesn’t that mean anything!
Does anyone else on this site relate? I’d like to read your input.
If you are already on an anti-depressant and an anti-anxiety medication, after a life time of struggle and suicidal ideation; and going through a hard time, running out of money and unable to get a job; how do you feel when a friend tells you that you worry too much, then recommends an essential oil calming combination?

Thank you for listening. I just had to get that out. I should have learned by now that those who haven’t been there will never understand. Repeating a hundred ‘la la’s, while sitting in a lotus position just doesn’t pay the electric bill.
When I say seniors, I don’t mean school grade. I mean ‘over 65.’ I want to know if there are any others near my age on this website. I’m not presently suicidal. I have been most of my life. But now death is a given in the next 30 years or so. I’m wondering how persons from my generation who have survived feel now. Are there any on this website?

It is said that one of the signs of depression is lack of interest in outside activities. But what if this world has such inane values that those activities simply hold no interest for us? Sports, for instance. Making lots of money. Marrying well. etc. An introspective person has little use for the frills and spills of a stupid world. We might enjoy yoga or sunsets or the ocean, something real, like a kitten or a puppy. But we don’t care who wins the blasted basketball game!
My heart goes out to Robin for the pain he endured and to his family and friends for their loss. So many gifted comics suffer from depression. Comedy is one way to deal with an inane world and internal pain. Robin shared his gift abundantly with us. RIP, Robin.
It’s hard to read all the pain in these posts. Why? Because I’ve been there. No one to spend Christmas with. The one time of year when everyone else has family and friends to share the time, and I had no one. It hurts. Especially, if you are depressed to begin with. Reaching out is hopeless. Who wants a misfit around? Christmas time is indeed the saddest time of the year for people like us, because the fact that we don’t fit in stabs like a knife.

Even though I have survived into my elder years and have mostly good days now, I still have my bad days. On those days, I wonder why respectful painless assisted suicide is illegal for the person who can’t share human joys and efforts; hence chooses not to continue living a painful life.

I’m 68 and have lived with depression since age 16. Anti-depressants help, but sure don’t solve everything. I’m single and have supported myself since college, but couldn’t handle the duplicity, meanness and emptiness of a corporate job and didn’t have the energy to start my own business. Besides, back in my day there was one career for women–marriage. I didn’t want that job unless it was a mutually fulfilling relationship, something I never found. As I told my mother once, I’m not a whore for sale and I won’t use a man that way.

I’m a long term suicide survivor. I know how hard it is and how it feels to want to die. So I’ve written a novel about a girl who goes down that path and ends up in a hospital, like I did, and actually gets help. When I present it at writer’s groups, they don’t understand why the girl wants to die just because the love of her life dumped her. Geez. These people must have robot “stable emotions,” like saw dust instead of guts. It’s never just one thing but sometimes it takes just one more thing to push a person over that edge.
