Does anyone know any good coping mechanisms that could help me when i get filled with anger?
I usually cut myself to calm myself down. Any suggestions are fine.
Thanks guys.
Anger is a strong emotion. If you’re young you will probably mostly grow out of it. As you mature you kind just adapt and don’t take things as seriously. The most unfortunate part of anger is that it makes you completely irrational which can lead to more problems.
The best treatment is a nice pet that you can hold and play with. This can help a lot and the presence of a dog or cat can actually lower your blood pressure and release chemicals in your brain kind of like when a mother holds her child.
I use to hate cats with a passion but we adopted two kittens and whenever I get depressed or really mad spending time with them instantly takes me to a better state of mind. I could literally be on the brink of smashing everything in my home… Its even gotten to a point of dependency…
Now we have a puppy… Hahahahaha Best time of my life. Usually when I wake up in the morning I lay there and think about how I’m going to kill myself… Now I wake up to puppy face jumping around and wanting to play. Its awesome.
But of course pets come at a price… They can be complete a-holes…
I have 4 strategies ranging from easy/wrong to difficult/right.
#1. Easy & wrong (but effective). Take 4 or 5 sleeping pills and knock yourself out for 10 hrs. Over time it’ll scramble your brain but for an occasional fix it works for me.
#2. A little harder & possibly dangerous. Workout. It’s generally a bad idea to workout when you’re angry because you can seriously injure yourself (and others) by throwing 45lb plates around the room. But a good punching bag can do wonders for the soul.
#3. Pretty hard but very rewarding. Like DTroll said, get yourself a pet. Rescue a death row dog or cat from your local shelter, and that animal will always remind you that you’ve something good in the world. He/she will always remind you that there is at least 1 good thing in this crappy world.
#4. Super hard but definitely THE best way to cope. I learned this from Gandhi’s book (though I still can’t do it right). Learn to harness the power of your anger. Hold on to it & use it for your purpose in life. Anger is power, just like fire or electricity or the sun. Maybe martial arts training can help… or watch a ton of Clint Eastwood flicks.
Good point… I usually don’t get that far. I end up pulling a muscle while trying to throw a plate & that sorta cuts my workout short. So I swallow some sleeping pills and go to sleep for 10 hrs with my dogs :s
Hey guys, thanks so much for all your advice.
But i’m in a weird situation here, I have a broken ankle so i can’t workout. I also live in a rental so i can’t have any pets. I can’t take sleeping pills due to medication i’m already on and don’t have enough time to waste the day. Also i don’t believe in any spiritual things like yoga exercises to calm yourself or meditate.
I usually go for a long walk by myself with my music to calm down but then the moment i set foot inside the door the rage builds back up (However with my broken ankle i can’t actually do this even if i wanted to).
I don’t want to sound like i am rejecting anything, i just thought you might have more advice for me that is specific to my situation.
Once i move i will be getting a dog though, can’t wait! ^_^

#2 except wouldn’t throwing 45lb plates around the room destroy the room?

I usually almost break my hand punching stuff then go lay down
That’s actually great advice. Unless you really break your hand, then it’s sucky advice.
I really need to buy a real punching bag to prevent that
