I literally came home straight from the doctors yesterday evening to an apt full of smoke. Asshole in the apt 2 floors below smoked- again- and my apt literally smelt like an ashtray. I had complained to the office 3 weeks ago, and he had laid low for a bit, then started smoking up a few days later. But the smoking was less and I thought maybe he was making an effort to smoke inside his apt rather than outside (still not allowed and I can still smell the smoke even if he smokes inside his apt).
I decided not to go to the office as it was less initially after the day of complaint, but with each passing day from the complaint he’s started smoking more and more. He’s started to be more sneaky about his smoking- he’d dart inside as soon as he smoked so I couldn’t see it was him. I hadn’t lodged a second complaint as I could no longer see/catch him smoking outside.
So yesterday, I happened to have left my bedroom window open with the bedroom doors closed and the living room window opened a tiny crack, and the difference in air in the 2 rooms were startling. I didn’t realize it was that bad. In the past 3 weeks when I did smell smoke, I guess when you’re inside the apt and the smoke slowly comes in, you don’t smell it all at once like I did coming home so I never realized just how much smoke comes into my apt and how bad it is.
Also, I hadn’t realized smoking in/outside the premises weren’t allowed so I had never reported him before (prior to my complaint 3 weeks ago).
Anyhow, the office is closed today, for thanksgiving. Even if I go Friday or Saturday to complain, which I will, he’s going to continue smoking. People who smoke and especially people who smoke daily are not going to stop. The only reason I didn’t go back to the office to complain was that I could no longer see him smoking outside (he would dart in his apt in the past when he’d see me). Now he’s gotten more sneaky so I hadn’t caught him visually smoking since then (but I know it’s him as he is the only one that smokes).
So after I go to the office, they’re going to call him, he’s going to lay low for a few days, then start up again just like he did the first time. Then I’m going to have to go back to the office again. People who smoke daily aren’t going to stop.
I’ve been coughing the past 2 months because of this asshole. I have been sick because of him, as if I wasn’t already sick from all my other things. The last thing I need is to get sick from someone else smoking.

You can only hope that asshole gets lung cancer. That will stop him from smoking for sure
No it won’t. My sister smokes (she lives in another state) and I am the one with asthma, not her.
Life just has a way of shitting on me.
People who smoke near others are inconsiderate not everyone wants to inhale their second hand smoke..
Right. I don’t want to get lung cancer from breathing in his fucking smoke. And it’s not just like I can walk away. It’s inside my frigging apt. It gets in my bedroom, on my bedsheets, on my robe, everywhere. Everything smells like smoke. And I already have breathing issues.
Actually I’ve read that staying on smoke affects you way more badly than the one who’s actually smoking the cigarette in the first place. But then sometimes we really have on options unless we go dark side, then there are plenty of options.
I can’t believe anyone even enjoys smoking…
Jesus christ. Keep complaining, but try to do it in a positive way. If smoking isn’t allowed inside or outside, (I’m a little unsure about the rules there) they need to know what he’s doing, especially with your breathing problems. If management won’t do anything, contact the owners via certified mail and phone, but be nice. Apartments are a give and take, you have to give up some freedom for the good of the group, and they need to know about this guy. Keep track of all your interactions with management (dates and times of your complaints, who you spoke to, etc.) in case you have to get legal. Sorry you have to put up with this.
An air purifier should eliminate second hand tobacco smoke. You should get one
No it doesn’t. Smoke still comes into the apt and into my lungs.
Like Once said, keep complaining. When people start to feel a consequence for their behavior they usually do modify it. This asshole is making you sick. No good. Also this asshole is making others sick as well. You are complaining for them too.
