It really sucks when you attempt to kill yourself, or talk about killing yourself, you have to go stay in a psychiatric hospital for however long. I know that there are some facilities that are awesome and are really helpful, but it seems that most of them don’t do any good.
There you are at the lowest point in your life and absolutely miserable, and then you are forced to go stay at a hospital with all of your rights stripped away when really the best thing is for you to be in your home where you are comfortable and can go about your life.
When you’re forced to be in a hospital, whether you meant to kill yourself or not, it screws up even further the aspects of your life that were already bad enough. You could lose your job, fail your school assignments, miss important payments, strain relationships, etc. If you are depressed then the last thing you need is to worry about all that stuff on top of everything else.
If these psychiatric facilities operated better then it wouldn’t be as bad. If they were properly staffed and qualified and had a better therapy process then whenever you do have to go you won’t have to be there very long. The times I have been in these places there was very little therapy and a lot of just sitting around doing nothing at all. And you have to lie about every little thing so they will let you out.
This isn’t helpful. If someone is serious about killing themselves, then being forced to stay isn’t going to do any good. It might just make it worse. And for the people who aren’t serious about it, who are just depressed or calling for help, they would do way better with outpatient treatment then having to stay at some awful hospital against their will.
I know it differs by state and other things, but I don’t think any adult should be forced to stay in a hospital against their will. I think we should be able to leave whenever we want to. If we try it out and don’t think it’s doing any good then we should be able to leave. From my experience having to stay has caused way more damage to me than it would have if I could have just gone home.

Its done as a punishment . Didnt u know depression and suicidal thoughts where crimes. How dare you express yourself in a way that makes others feel uncomfartable. Obvi im being sarcastic, but thats literally how society views it
So true,My visit there was just constant lying about my condition,very little treatment,it didn’t help me at all,it only made it worser.
I can attest to the fact that the hospital only makes things worse. theres nothing positive about extended hospital stays I can tell u that.
From my experience, the in-patient stay was essentially a box to check on the list. In today’s CYA world, the government, hospital, etc. has to account for the actions it took during the “crisis” moments. Heaven forbid something happens down the road with accusations and lawsuits flying, nobody wants to be in a difficult position… so the inpatient visits in some respects become a form of CYA.
I’m NOT suggesting that all providers are bad… However, there are too many hospitals out there which focus more on CYA and billing than they do on addressing the problem(s) which contributed to the stay.
CYA = Cover Your A**
