I have argued against the idea of rational suicide in the past but lately… I have been thinking – I am completely rational, not really depressed or in a PTSD mode and I have thought that suicide is the best option, most sensible really and probably the better way to leave this world… By my hand, my choice. Don’t worry my date isn’t for awhile now. What do you think about suicide can it ever be a rational completely sane choice?

There are some people who conclude that suicide is the best option after logically looking at their present circumstances and their future outlook. I think sometimes, however, the thought process is missing a piece (or pieces) of possible alternates. Therapy, social services, community support, etc. are often able to provide assistance. However, sometimes due to stigma or other reasons, people don’t reach out for help. So they conclude that suicide is the final and only remaining option. I’m not here to judge. As I’ve been in those shoes and spent some time inpatient a few years back, I had determined over an extended period of time that it was time to call it a life. So while I won’t judge anybody who concludes something similar, I would strongly encourage them to seek out and use whatever resources are available. Suicide is often a solution that is arrived at when other interim steps would work so much better. In your shoes, I wouldn’t leave the world. I’d figure out what is needed to get support and work on that strategy. Don’t set a date because you effectively give up on yourself. Mental health doesn’t run on a timetable. People respond at different rates to treatment options. Above all, keep the faith in yourself.
I agree with Distant.Road: I believe many people truly feel that they have given the proper time and thought to the decision of suicide, but perhaps have not sought out a route they either didn’t think of or, for whatever reason, are hesitant to embark on.
It is easy for our dark moments to cloud our judgment and when we are in pain, it is often difficult to see our path clearly, even if we feel clear-minded and rational at certain moments. I wish you the best.

If people can’t even rationally choose soft-drink brands, it’s hard to think they could rationally choose something more serious. If you asked if people could rationalize the choice, I’d definitely say so.
